Mumbai, Aug 3 — Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez has paid tribute to Madonna’s iconic Like a Virgin by recreating one of the music video’s most memorable moments at the same Venice canal location.

Lopez shared a video on Instagram in which she is seen swaying and performing on a gondola ride beneath one of the city’s historic bridges. “I had to do it…” she wrote in the caption.

Like a Virgin is the title track from Madonna’s second studio album, released in 1984. Written and composed by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, the dance song features two hooks and finds Madonna singing in a high register over a continuous arrangement of synths and a prominent bassline. Its lyrics are deliberately ambiguous, filled with innuendo and open to multiple interpretations.

The accompanying music video, directed by Mary Lambert, shows Madonna sailing down the canals of Venice in a gondola and moving through a castle in a white wedding dress. The song has since been covered and parodied by numerous artists, including Elton John and “Weird Al” Yankovic, and has been referenced in films and television series such as Reservoir Dogs, Moulin Rouge! and Glee.

Lopez was most recently seen in Office Romance, directed by Ol Parker and written by Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly. The film stars Lopez and Goldstein and centres on Jackie Cruz, the iron-fisted president and CEO of Air Cruz, whose strict no-fraternisation policy is tested when she develops a mutual attraction with a new lawyer in her company.

Her next project is Ice Age: Boiling Point, an animated adventure comedy directed by John C. Donkin. It is the sixth main instalment in the Ice Age series and the sequel to Ice Age: Collision Course. Lopez reprises her role alongside Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Simon Pegg and Queen Latifah.

By returning to the exact Venice setting that featured in Madonna’s 1984 video, Lopez offered a playful, personal homage to one of pop music’s most recognisable visual moments.
