RJ Mitte, the actor known worldwide for playing Walter White Jr. in “Breaking Bad,” has reportedly died at 34. His representative announced the news in a statement saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of RJ Mitte,” and described him as a renowned actor, social activist and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. The cause of death was not immediately known.
The Role That Defined His Career
Mitte first appeared in “Breaking Bad” in 2008, playing the son of chemistry teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White, the role that brought Bryan Cranston worldwide recognition. The series ran for five seasons between 2008 and 2013. It is widely regarded as one of television’s most influential dramas and has been named among the best TV shows of the 21st century.
Mitte himself lived with cerebral palsy. His representative, Sean Reilly, said he brought authenticity to the role through that experience and created a platform for awareness of disability and inclusion in society.
Tributes From Co-Stars
Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, said he was shocked by the news. “RJ, my friend, I love you,” he wrote. “You will be missed. You are not alone. Always remember that.” Dean Norris, who played Mitte’s on-screen uncle, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent, said he was heartbroken.
Advocacy Beyond the Screen
According to Reilly, Mitte was president of The Mitte Foundation, which supported social service and community work. He also used his platform to challenge stereotypes and push for greater participation by people with disabilities.
Why It Matters
Mitte’s work was among the most visible examples of a disabled actor playing a disabled character in mainstream television. If confirmed, his early death would draw attention to how much influence he had on conversations about representation in entertainment.
