The iconic playback singer, Suman Kalyanpur, has left us forever today. The singer died at the age of 89 at her residence in Mumbai. As a singer, she was known as Suman Hemdi prior to marriage, but post marriage, she began singing under her new identity of Suman Kalyanpur.
Suman Kalyanpur was born on 28th January 1937 in Bhawanipur in the undivided country of India, now Bangladesh. Prior to marriage, Suman had sung many songs as Suman Hemdi. She began her Marathi singing career with the song Gadima composed by poet G.D. Madgulkar.
She subsequently lent her voice to a number of memorable Marathi songs, including "Nimbonicha Zadamage," "Are Sansar Sansar," "Ketakicha Bani Tithe Nachala More," and "Rimjhim Jharti Shravandhara." These songs remain popular in Maharashtra even today.
Suman Kalyanpur sang thousands of songs in Marathi in addition to Hindi, Gujarati and Bengali. In 2023, Government of India honoured her with Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian awards of the country for her contribution to music. She had been away from the art world for some time due to her old age. The entire film industry and millions of music lovers were plunged into mourning on hearing the news of her death.
