The makers of director Shankar's Indian 3 have released a new poster of the film, starring Kamal Haasan as the anti-corruption crusader Senapathy. Lyca Productions shared it with the caption, "Senapathy is back with zero tolerance. The resurgence begins in #Indian3 War Mode."

Sources told IANS that post-production is in full swing, as a large part of the third instalment was shot during the making of the second.

How Indian 2 Became Two Films

Indian 2 had a long and troubled production. Announced in 2017, filming began in January 2019 and stretched over five years, wrapping only in March 2024. Work was halted after a fatal accident on set, then by the Covid pandemic and disagreements among the director, actor and producers, before Red Giant Movies stepped in to help.

The final footage ran for over six hours, so the makers split the story into two films. Indian 2 released on July 12, 2024, while Indian 3: War Mode remains unreleased.

Why It Matters: A Franchise Seeking a Comeback

The new poster carries high stakes. The original Indian (1996), with Kamal Haasan, Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar, was a huge blockbuster. But Indian 2 received negative reviews, with critics pointing to its long runtime and lack of emotional depth, though Kamal Haasan and Siddharth's performances were praised. The film grossed around ₹150 crore.

After that response, reports had suggested uncertainty around the third part's future. The fresh poster and post-production update signal that the makers are now preparing to bring Senapathy's story to a close. Kamal Haasan has said he was more excited about the third instalment than the second, so fans will hope the finale delivers what Part 2 could not.

A Busy Season for Kamal Haasan

The update comes as Kamal Haasan is also busy as a producer. His banner, Raaj Kamal Films International, is producing Rajinikanth's Dharman, which recently completed its third schedule.
