On Gandhi Jayanti, Sanjay Dutt turned to one of his most loved characters to remember Mahatma Gandhi. The actor shared a scene featuring his Munna Bhai and Arshad Warsi's Circuit, in a conversation about the Father of the Nation.
"Some values never go out of time. Remembering Mahatma Gandhiji and the ideals of truth, peace and compassion that continue to inspire generations. Happy Gandhi Jayanti," he wrote on Instagram.
The Scene
In the clip, Munna asks Circuit what is special about October 2. Circuit explains that it is Bapu's birthday and identifies him as Mahatma Gandhi. The conversation moves to Gandhi's belief in answering hatred and violence with peace rather than revenge. Munna calls himself a "big fan of Bapu," recalling how Gandhi stood up to British rule through his principles.
Why It Matters: The Film That Made Gandhi "Cool" Again
The conversation about October 2 is the setup of Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), the sequel to Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003). In the film, Circuit discovers that October 2, which Munna knows only as a "dry day," is actually Gandhi Jayanti. That sends Munna to a Gandhi library, where Gandhi himself begins to appear before him.
Munna then begins practising what he calls "Gandhigiri," a new word for Gandhism, to help ordinary people solve their problems. The word entered everyday language, and the film's message travelled far beyond cinema halls.
Its recognition matched its reach. The film won four National Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Supporting Actor for Dilip Prabhavalkar, who played Gandhi. It was also screened at the United Nations auditorium on November 10, 2006, making it the first Hindi film shown there.
That is why the scene Sanjay chose still works two decades later. It reminds viewers that Gandhi's ideas can be explained not only through history books, but through a street-smart gangster discovering them for the first time.
On the Work Front
Sanjay Dutt was last seen in Ahmed Khan's comedy Welcome To The Jungle, alongside Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Suniel Shetty and a large ensemble cast. He also appeared in the political drama Aakhri Sawal, directed by Abhijeet Mohan Warang, which released in theatres on May 15, 2026.
The Bottom Line
Twenty years after Munna Bhai first discovered Bapu, Sanjay Dutt's Gandhi Jayanti post shows that the character's simple, funny lesson in non-violence still has the power to connect with a new generation.
