Assam Govt to Donate GST Share from Zubeen Garg’s Film to Kalaguru Artist Foundation
Zubeen Garg's Last Film: The Assam government has decided to donate the GST collected from Zubeen Garg's upcoming Assamese film, "Roi Roi Biennale," to the singer's foundation, which works for the welfare of the poor.
Speaking at a press conference following the cabinet meeting of the Assam government, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, "The state government will donate its portion of the GST from Zubeen Garg's last movie, "Roi Roi Biennale," specially to the Kalaguru Artist Foundation. This will be for the treatment of artists, aid to flood-affected people, and education of underprivileged students." This foundation was established by singer Zubeen Garg. Zubeen Garg's recently released film, "Roi Roi Biennale," has a release date of October 31, 2025.
Himanta Biswa Sarma further added, "Cinema tickets priced above ₹100 attract 18 percent GST. Tickets priced below ₹100 attract 5 percent GST. The state's share is half of this rate. We will receive the money in about a month. We will then hand it over to the foundation." The Chief Minister stated that this decision was made after consultation with Zubeen Garg's wife.
Singer Zubeen Garg died on September 19th while allegedly scuba diving in Singapore. The singer had gone there to participate in the fourth NEIF. The five accused were taken to Baksa jail on October 16th after their police remand ended. A total of seven people have been arrested in the case so far. Two other accused, Garg's band members Amritprava Mahanta and Shekharjyoti Goswami, are in judicial custody at Haflong jail. A 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police's CID is investigating the case. SIT head Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta traveled to Singapore last week with another officer as part of the investigation. The team has since returned from Singapore after completing the investigation.
