Before agreeing to let a film be made on his life, public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam laid down conditions for the makers of “Prahaar.” In a conversation with India Today, he explained what he asked for. The film stars Rajkummar Rao and Vamika Gabbi and is set to release soon.

The Two Conditions

Nikam said his first condition was that no character in the film should be glorified, and that this included himself. His second was that the real names of all those involved in the legal proceedings should be used.

He said the makers had no objection. According to Nikam, they also obtained No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the concerned people, including Judge Madan Laxmandas Tahiliani.

What the Film Is About

“Prahaar” is based on the life of Ujjwal Nikam and presents what the makers describe as his untold story. He fought for the hanging of Ajmal Kasab, the accused in the 2008 26/11 attacks.

Cast and Crew

The film is produced by Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films and directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware. Alongside Rajkummar Rao and Vamika Gabbi, it stars Sikander Kher and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Release Date

“Prahaar” will release in theatres on October 16, 2026.

Why It Matters

Biopics about real legal cases carry a particular risk: dramatisation can blur facts or cast real people in a flattering or unfair light. Nikam’s insistence on real names and no glorification suggests the film is aiming for a documentary-like restraint, and obtaining NOCs may help the makers avoid disputes. Audiences will judge whether the final film lives up to those promises.
