MUMBAI, July 14 — Veteran actor Govinda announced his return to Hindi cinema on Sunday with a new film titled "Roopa," which he is also producing, at a press conference held in Mumbai. The 62-year-old actor unveiled the film's first poster and introduced newcomer Rani Swarnkar, who will star opposite him as the leading lady.
The announcement ends a theatrical absence of several years for the actor, who was last seen on screen in the 2019 film "Rangeela Raja" and appeared in a 2022 documentary, "Naam Tha Kanhaiyalal." His last major theatrical run of hits came in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Addressing reporters, Govinda reflected on repeated setbacks in his career and said he had chosen to view them as part of a larger design. He said he had been written off by people many times over the years, and that they kept saying he would no longer appear in films. He added that he had always found a way to begin again, framing his return as an attempt to prove his critics wrong once more.
He said "Roopa" was conceived with a young audience in mind and that he hoped it would encourage viewers to pursue their ambitions rather than settle for less.
A film built around the number 14
Govinda, who has spoken publicly before about his belief in numerology, used part of the press conference to trace what he described as a recurring pattern of the number 14 across his career. He recalled that he began following numerology at age 14, went on to sign 14 films in a single week early in his career, and enjoyed roughly 14 years as a leading star in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The actor also pointed to his political career, noting he had served as a Member of Parliament during the 14th Lok Sabha, before what he called a 14-year period of professional struggle that preceded his current comeback. He said that this time, he did not want to wait several more years before restarting his career.
New faces, new production banner
Beyond Rani Swarnkar's casting, reports from the press conference indicate the project will draw additional new talent from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, though full casting details have not yet been disclosed. "Roopa" marks Govinda's entry into film production, a first for the actor, who has otherwise worked primarily as a performer across a career spanning more than three decades.
No release date, production banner name, or director has been officially confirmed for "Roopa" at this stage. Further details, including the technical crew and shooting schedule, are expected to be announced by the production team in the coming weeks.
