The Central Government on Wednesday selected Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, he will hold the post for a tenure of three years. The CBFC certifies films.
Vempati is going to replace the existing chairperson, Prasoon Joshi, who is now heading Prasar Bharati. It was following the resignation of Joshi that the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting approached Vempati.
With Vempati's appointment as the chairman of the CBFC, people are curious to know who he is. Vempati is a well-known figure in media and broadcasting. He previously served as the CEO of Prasar Bharati. Under his leadership, Doordarshan and All India Radio underwent numerous changes, modernizing them. Vempati also has expertise in technology and artificial intelligence. He is a co-founder of AI4India and is involved in an initiative called BharatGen. He has served in senior positions in various government and educational institutions linked to science and technology and is considered highly experienced.
Vempati holds a B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Bombay. After his studies, he pursued a career in media, holding various positions there. He has written a book titled "Collective Spirit: Concrete Action" about the "Mann Ki Baat" program. This suggests his strong writing skills.
It is believed that Vempati's experience will improve the CBFC. His knowledge of media and public relations could be beneficial to the CBFC. It is hoped that he will make the certification process easier and more transparent.
