When 19-year-old Kaziah Liz Mejo from Kerala walked away with the Miss Universe India 2026 title at Zee Studios, the person watching her most closely from the jury desk was Sushmita Sen — India's first-ever Miss Universe, back on the same stage 32 years after her history-making 1994 win in Manila.

Sen wasn't the only Bollywood export in the room. Urvashi Rautela — who won India's national crown in 2015 under the Miss Diva branding — sat beside her, as did Celina Jaitly, the Femina Miss India Universe 2001 winner who famously finished fourth runner-up at the global finale that year. Add 2024 titleholder Rhea Singha, film producer Pragya Kapoor of Kedarnath and Bhoot Police fame, entrepreneur Visha Ladhia and reigning Miss Charm 2025 Anna Blanco to the mix, and you had arguably the most star-heavy jury the Indian pageant circuit has assembled in years.

For Bollywood watchers, this is more than trivia. India's pageant-to-cinema pipeline has always been one of the industry's most reliable feeder routes — Sushmita, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Aishwarya Rai, and later Urvashi Rautela and Celina Jaitly all made the jump from sash to screen. The Glamanand Group, which owns the Miss Universe India franchise, appears to be leaning into that legacy rather than shying away from it. Putting four former beauty queens on a single panel isn't accidental; it's a soft casting call as much as it is a competition.

Mejo, the woman they picked, brings her own crossover potential. The Mavelikkara-born, Abu Dhabi-raised law student first hit the international circuit at Miss Teen International 2025, where she finished first runner-up. Earlier this year she added the Miss Universe Kerala state title before landing in Jaipur, where she beat 51 other finalists drawn from states, wildcard entries and the NRI category. Photogenic, articulate and camera-comfortable, she fits neatly into the profile of past titleholders who found their way into film and endorsement work well before their reign ended.

The night's other winners will attract their share of screen tests too. Tamil Nadu's Vaishnavi Gannesh doubled up as first runner-up and Miss International India 2026 — an instant two-title résumé that regional-language producers historically watch closely. Gujarat's Anushri Satavlekar took second runner-up, followed by Maharashtra's Tejaswini Shrivastava and Uttarakhand's Anubha Vashist Chaudhary. Between them, the top five give casting directors a fresh line-up spread across four film industries.

The bigger picture for the entertainment ecosystem is the reign that starts now. Mejo heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in November for the 75th Miss Universe pageant — India's first serious shot at the global crown since Harnaaz Sandhu's 2021 win. A strong placement won't just make national headlines; it will translate directly into Bollywood-adjacent brand deals, magazine covers and, almost certainly, a debut project offer or two before the tiara comes off next year.

Which brings us back to Sushmita Sen at the judges' desk. Thirty-two years after her Manila moment reset what an Indian beauty queen could become in Hindi cinema, she's now the one deciding who gets that shot next. That, for Bollywood, is the real story of the night.
