Few Indian streaming franchises have built the kind of cult following that "Mirzapur" has since its 2018 debut on Prime Video, and that fandom is now set to be tested on a much bigger stage. "Mirzapur: The Movie," presented by Excel Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios, has officially completed its censor formalities, receiving an 'A' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification - a decision entirely in keeping with a franchise long defined by its unflinching violence, profanity, and morally grey power struggles.
According to details listed on the CBFC's official website, the film runs for 197 minutes and 19 seconds, translating to 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 19 seconds - making it one of the longer theatrical releases of the year, and firmly placing it within the runtime the makers had reportedly been targeting for an immersive big-screen experience.
Speaking about the certification process ahead of release, director Gurmeet Singh had made it clear the team wasn't interested in diluting the show's raw tone for a theatrical audience. He noted that the makers were aiming for an Adults Only certification from the outset, working within CBFC's language and content guidelines rather than softening the material. Singh pointed to the recent success of unapologetically adult-oriented films as evidence that Indian theatrical audiences are now receptive to mature storytelling without compromise - a shift he credited with making a project like "Mirzapur: The Movie" viable on the big screen in the first place.
Following A Growing Trend Of Long, Intense Films
With its runtime, "Mirzapur: The Movie" joins a growing list of post-pandemic Hindi releases that have leaned into longer, more immersive formats for violence-heavy, adult-skewing content. It follows in the footsteps of "Animal" (3 hours 23 minutes), "The Bengal Files" (3 hours 24 minutes), "Pushpa 2 – The Rule" (3 hours 20 minutes), and "Dhurandhar" and its sequel "Dhurandhar The Revenge," which ran even longer at 3 hours 34 minutes and 3 hours 49 minutes respectively. The pattern suggests audiences are increasingly willing to sit through extended runtimes for films that promise dense plotting and high-stakes drama - exactly the territory "Mirzapur" has built its reputation on across three streaming seasons.
The Cast And Crew Bringing Mirzapur To Cinemas
The film brings back its original power players: Pankaj Tripathi reprises his iconic role as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit, the character whose bloody rise to power anchored much of the series' narrative arc. Notably, the film also marks the much-anticipated return of Divyenndu as Munna Bhaiya, a fan-favourite character whose comeback has generated significant buzz on its own. The ensemble is rounded out by newer additions, including Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar, who steps into the role of Bablu Pandit, originally played by Vikrant Massey in the series.
Directed by Gurmeet Singh with a screenplay by Puneet Krishna, the film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner, in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. AA Films is handling theatrical distribution.
Why It Matters: OTT-To-Theatre Crossover
"Mirzapur: The Movie" represents a rare and closely watched experiment in Indian entertainment - a hit web series making the leap to a full theatrical release rather than the more conventional reverse trajectory. Its performance at the box office will likely be studied closely by the industry as a bellwether for whether streaming-first IP can successfully translate into theatrical box office pull, especially for content built around long-form character arcs rather than a traditional three-act film structure.
Release Details
"Mirzapur: The Movie" is set to hit theatres on September 4, 2026, releasing in both Hindi and Telugu. With its trailer already stoking anticipation among the franchise's massive fanbase and its runtime and certification now locked in, all eyes will be on whether the film can convert years of streaming loyalty into a strong opening at the box office.
