For a long time, the future of "Indian 3" looked unclear. After "Indian 2" underperformed, many believed the film might be shelved. The producers have now confirmed that work on "Indian 3" has begun, with Kamal Haasan reprising his role as Senapathy. The story and direction are by S. Shankar. A release date has not yet been announced.
The makers shared the news on social media with the caption "Senapathy is back, with zero tolerance. 'Indian 3: War Mode' begins." A poster accompanied it, showing Kamal Haasan in three different characters, one of them Senapathy.
Why the Film Was in Doubt
"Indian 3" was first conceived as a direct sequel to "Indian 2," and many portions of both films were shot together. A glimpse of the third film was shown at the end of "Indian 2," hinting at Senapathy's past and introducing his father, Veerasekaran Balaram.
However, "Indian 2," released in July 2024, fell short of expectations. It was reportedly made on a budget of about ₹250 crore and drew largely negative reviews for its story and presentation. It is regarded as one of 2024's biggest big-budget flops. According to reports, it grossed approximately ₹148 to ₹151 crore worldwide. It opened with around ₹25.6 crore net in India on day one, but earnings fell to about ₹3.15 crore net on its first Monday.
What "Indian 3" Will Explore
The third film will travel back in time to tell the story of Senapathy's father, Veerasekaran Balaram, with Kamal Haasan playing a freedom fighter. This adds a historical layer to the franchise. Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and S.J. Suryah are also set to return.
Where the Franchise Began
The "Indian" series began in 1996 and marked the first collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Shankar. Haasan played two roles: Senapathy, a former freedom fighter and martial arts expert, and Senapathy's corrupt son, Chandru. The film dealt with corruption and social responsibility, was well received, and won several National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Kamal Haasan. "Indian 2" brought Senapathy back after nearly three decades, setting his fight against corruption in an era of social media and public anger.
Cast and Crew
Music is by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Ravi Varman and production design by Muthuraj Thangavel. Subaskaran and G.K.M. Tamil Kumaran produce under the Lyca Productions banner.
Why This Revival Matters
A sequel returning after a costly setback shows the makers' confidence in finishing the story rather than abandoning it. The shift to a freedom-fighter origin may give the film a fresh identity, distinct from the contemporary corruption theme that "Indian 2" struggled to land. Without a release date, though, audiences will wait for a trailer or teaser to judge the film's direction.
