Monalisa Opens Up on Love, Betrayal and Twists in Love To Hate You
Actress says her character’s emotional complexity and the story’s secrets drew her to the project that blends romance with family drama.
MUMBAI: Actress Monalisa is preparing to take on a more layered role in Love To Hate You, a show that mixes romance, family conflict, hidden truths and unexpected turns. The series examines how relationships shift when trust erodes and long-buried secrets surface. For Monalisa, the emotional range of the story is its strongest draw.
She said the non-linear nature of her character convinced her to join the project. “What I really liked about the show was that my character is not very simple. There are many emotions and situations that she goes through. I like playing characters where I can show different shades. When I read the story, I felt there was something interesting for me as an actor. The story has love, but it also has betrayal, pain and many twists, so I was excited to be a part of it,” Monalisa said.
The narrative repeatedly tests trust between characters. Monalisa approached the emotional scenes by focusing on the character’s internal state rather than simply delivering lines. “When you are playing an emotional character, you have to understand what the person is feeling. Sometimes the character is angry, sometimes hurt and sometimes confused. I tried to understand why she was reacting in a particular way. I also tried to keep it very natural because these emotions should not look forced. The more you understand your character, the easier it becomes to perform those scenes,” she said.
Navigating Secrets and Simultaneous Storylines
The actress pointed to the density of plot elements as both the challenge and the appeal. Family tensions, concealed information and misunderstandings run parallel throughout the story. “The challenging part is that there are so many things happening at the same time. There are family issues, secrets and misunderstandings. As an actor, you have to remember what your character knows and what she doesn’t know. Sometimes you are playing a scene with one emotion, but inside you know there is something else happening. That makes it interesting but also difficult,” she said.
Even while reading the script, Monalisa encountered moments that surprised her. She declined to disclose specific plot points. “Yes, there were some moments where I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to happen?’ I don’t want to reveal anything because that will spoil the fun for the audience. But there are definitely moments which will make people stop and think. Even while reading the script, I wanted to know what would happen next,” she said.
She believes viewers will recognise the emotional core of her character. Many people have experienced the gap between what they see and the fuller truth in relationships. “I think everyone has faced situations where they have trusted someone and later felt hurt or confused. Sometimes we don’t know the complete truth and we react according to what we see. My character also goes through these kinds of emotions. I feel people will understand that side of her because relationships are never perfect,” Monalisa said.
Building On-Screen Comfort
Chemistry between the leads required preparation beyond the camera. Monalisa said the performers spent time talking and getting to know one another so that emotional and romantic sequences would feel grounded. “The chemistry has to look comfortable and real. You cannot just create it in front of the camera. We spent time talking and understanding each other as actors. Once you are comfortable with your co-actors, it becomes easier to perform emotional and romantic scenes. I think that comfort will be visible on screen,” she said.
Asked to sum up the show in three words, she chose: “Love, secrets and twists.”
Love To Hate You positions itself as a relationship drama in which appearances rarely match reality. For Monalisa, the opportunity to move through anger, hurt, confusion and shifting alliances is the primary attraction of the role. No release date or platform details were provided with her comments.
