Why It Matters: A Rare Reverse Migration

Pallavi was born in Perth to Indian parents who had moved to Australia in the early 1980s, and grew up in Melbourne. Trained in the classical dance form Bharatanatyam, she moved to Mumbai around 2008–2010 to pursue films, taking a path opposite to the one many young Indians take. She also won the Miss India Australia title in 2010.

Her story stands out because the usual migration story runs the other way. For many in the Indian diaspora, India is the place their parents left; for Pallavi, it was the place she chose. That is also why fans are curious to hear more about “that time.”

A Career Across Four Countries

That choice shaped a career spanning India, Australia, the UK and the US.

What’s Next: Stay

Pallavi recently shared the announcement of her next film, Stay, a French-Indian romance. She plays Sailee, a recently divorced woman in India groomed to take over her father’s company, who falls for Leo, a delivery driver dreaming of becoming an actor, during a trip to Paris. Their relationship is tested by family pressure, class differences and cultural realities.

The project fits her journey well: like Pallavi herself, its story moves between cultures and countries.

The Bottom Line

For Pallavi Sharda, India was a dream before it became a home. And if her latest post is any sign, fans may soon hear the full story of how that dream unfolded.
