Tamil superstar and chief of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) Thalapathy Vijay is in the midst of another controversy. A Sunni Muslim body based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has declared a fatwa against him. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, national president of All India Muslim Jamaat and chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta, has accused Vijay of being anti-Muslim.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi said in the fatwa that Vijay has insulted the Muslim community through his films and the recent Iftar event. He referred to Vijay's 2022 film 'Beast', which allegedly linked the Muslim community to terrorism and extremism. The Maulana said, "Vijay showed Muslims as 'demons' and 'devils' in his films. Now to enter politics, he is showing love towards the Muslim community, which is just a strategy to get votes."

Apart from this, the Maulana criticized the Iftar party organized by Vijay at the YMCA Ground in Chennai on March 8. He alleged that the event was attended by 'drunkards and gamblers', who were neither fasting nor following Islamic rules. The Maulana termed it a violation of the sanctity of Ramadan and appealed to the Muslim community of Tamil Nadu to distance themselves from Vijay.

Complaints have been made about Vijay's Iftar party earlier as well. On March 11, the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat filed a complaint against Vijay in the Chennai Police Commissioner's office. The treasurer of the organization, Syed Kaus, had said, "Vijay's Iftar event was attended by people who had nothing to do with Roza or Iftar. This is an insult to the Muslim community." He also alleged that there was chaos at the event, and the foreign security personnel treated the guests like animals. Syed had clarified that this complaint has not been made for publicity, but to prevent such incidents in the future.

On March 8, Vijay organized a grand Iftar party in Chennai under the banner of his political party, TVK. During this, he was seen in white traditional dress and a cap. About 3,000 people attended the event, and Imams of 15 local mosques were also invited. Vijay's fans called this move a symbol of inclusiveness and brotherhood, but some people called it a step taken as part of a political strategy.
