While looks is what people notice when they meet you, you need to have talent to survive in the industry, says actress Sherleen Dutt. However, Sherleen, who has been a part of shows such as KINK and Honey Trap Squad as well as web series such as Koi Jaye Toh Le Aaye and Shringarika, adds that some people still judge you on the basis of looks when you look for work.
“Looks and physical presentation do play a role, not just in entertainment but in every industry. No matter how much we advocate for talent and hard work, the reality is that first impressions are often visual. People instinctively form opinions based on appearance, whether it’s confidence, grooming, or body language. That being said, while looks might open doors, sustaining success still requires skill, dedication, and personality,” she says.

Talking about her experiences, she says, “I’ve been judged—whether it’s for my weight, height, or even the way I dress. In this industry, scrutiny is inevitable. Earlier, it used to affect me, but over time, I’ve learned to focus on what truly matters: my craft and my confidence. If someone judges me unfairly, it says more about their mindset than about me. I just make sure I feel good in my skin and move on.”

She says that gradually things are changing. “Earlier, having good looks was often considered a direct ticket to opportunities, especially in industries like entertainment. But today, the landscape has changed. Audiences connect more with authenticity and talent rather than just beauty. While being well-presented still helps, it’s not the only factor. The rise of unconventional actors and professionals proves that personality, skill, and uniqueness now matter more than just conventional good looks,” she says.

Talking about how she dresses up when she steps outside, she says, “It depends on where I’m going. Mumbai is a city where people don’t always dress up formally, and even celebrities can be spotted in casual wear. I don’t always make a conscious effort to dress up, but I do ensure I’m presentable. Sometimes, I just step out in comfy clothes, and other times, if it’s a work-related place, I dress accordingly.”
