The web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha, has been in the headlines ever since its release. The show, which tells the story of the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in 1999, had recently caused a lot of controversy over the Hindu names of the terrorists. After this Netflix updated the disclaimer. However, the show seems to be caught in legal trouble once again.
Recently, news agency ANI has alleged that the makers have used archival footage in this series without permission. According to a report by Bar and Bench, ANI has filed a lawsuit against Netflix and the makers of IC 814.
The news agency has demanded the deletion of four episodes that purportedly include footage of prominent personalities such as then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and General Pervez Musharraf without license. ANI's lawyer Siddhant Kumar stated that unauthorized exploitation of their copyrighted materials or trademarks amounts to denting the brand's reputation in view of criticism of the serials.
It features the likes of actors such as Vijay Verma, Dia Mirza &Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Patralekha and Arvind Swami in pivotal roles. This six-episode web series streams on Netflix from 29 August 2024.
