Siddharth plays Amit Mukherjee, the man at the centre of that resurfaced connection — described as a warmhearted Bengali American who gives of himself freely, sometimes to his own detriment, and struggles to find stability even as those around him depend on him in moments of crisis.

"Unaccustomed Earth" draws from Lahiri's acclaimed collection, which explores the experiences of Indian American families and their relationships with identity, culture, family and home. Set across Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, the series follows multiple generations within the community, bringing together themes of love, personal choice, family ties and the experience of living between cultures.

What the Story Values: Belonging, Choice and the Weight of Expectation

At its heart, "Unaccustomed Earth" is less about plot twists than about the quiet negotiations every immigrant family recognises — between what one owes to family and what one owes to oneself. Parul's storyline, in particular, is built around a choice made years earlier under the weight of a father's expectations, and what happens when that old decision resurfaces alongside a chance to reconsider it. It's a premise that leans into a value at the core of Lahiri's original writing: that belonging isn't fixed once and settled — it's something each generation has to keep renegotiating, between the culture inherited and the life actually being lived.

The show's Cambridge-Boston setting, and its choice to follow "multiple generations within the community," suggests a series less interested in judging its characters' choices than in showing how those choices ripple outward — how one person's decision to finally reach for something they'd once given up can reshape the people around them, for better or worse. That tension between individual desire and communal expectation, and the honesty with which the show appears willing to sit inside difficult, sometimes messy choices rather than resolve them neatly, is where the series' emotional stakes — and its values — seem to live.

Behind the Scenes

The series has Madhuri Shekar as showrunner and writer, with John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow and Celia Costas also serving as executive producers. Ritesh Batra is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes. "Unaccustomed Earth" is produced by Warner Bros. Television and will stream exclusively on Netflix from December 17, 2026.
