The Film Federation of India (FFI), the apex body representing India’s film associations, has officially opened applications for producers seeking to represent the nation in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

Announced following an Executive Committee managing meeting, the selection process aims to shortlist the country's strongest cinematic contender for Hollywood's biggest annual stage.

Key Deadlines and Selection Timeline

Filmmakers across all regional language industries have until September 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM IST to submit their entries. Screenings of eligible contenders will commence on September 8.

According to FFI President Abhay Sinha, the federation is committed to ensuring a rigorous and equitable evaluation process.

"The FFI will provide all necessary assistance to producers to maintain a smooth, democratic, and transparent nomination process," Sinha stated. "We encourage active participation from filmmakers across India to submit their works and contend for the official selection."

Following the evaluation period, the FFI will officially reveal India’s chosen entry on September 19, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria and Jury Structure

To qualify for consideration under Academy guidelines, competing feature films must meet strict theatrical and operational criteria:

  • Release Window: First publicly exhibited in commercial motion picture theaters between October 15, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

  • Exhibition Mandate: The film must run for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial venue for profit benefiting both producer and exhibitor.

  • Format & Language: Open to feature-length narratives produced primarily in non-English Indian languages, adhering to global Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) guidelines.

The selection will be presided over by an independent jury committee led by an appointed Jury Chairman alongside recognized creative professionals across cinema, technical arts, and storytelling. Each jury member will review screened entries before casting a vote to determine the nation's single candidate.

Industry Landscape and Oscar Roadmap

The announcement comes during a transformative phase for Indian cinema’s global footprint. Sinha, who also serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), has continuously advocated for expanding Indian representation across global film markets.

During the previous selection cycle, the FFI evaluated 24 entries across diverse languages before choosing the drama Homebound as the nation's entry. Industry observers anticipate an equally competitive race this year given the high volume of critical hits released across Hindi, South Indian, and independent regional cinema circuits.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Emmy-winning host and comedian Conan O’Brien is set to return for his third consecutive year leading the global broadcast.

As entries flood in ahead of the September 7 deadline, all eyes remain on the FFI jury as they prepare to evaluate the country's finest cinematic offerings for global glory.
