Tamil cinema's horror-thriller pipeline just added another buzzworthy chapter. On Wednesday, actor and producer Dhanush officially unveiled the much-awaited trailer of director Mariyappan Chinna's upcoming horror thriller 'Immortal', featuring GV Prakash and Kayadu Lohar in the lead roles. The trailer arrives with a strong endorsement, a chilling premise and a September 4 release date already locked in — placing the film firmly on the radar of Tamil audiences and horror-thriller enthusiasts across the country.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) timeline to share the trailer, Dhanush wrote, "Here is #immortal trailer … best of luck @gvprakash." Coming from one of Tamil cinema's most influential contemporary figures, that simple line of encouragement carries meaningful promotional weight. Dhanush's public backing is likely to significantly boost the film's visibility across audience segments in the crucial run-up to its release.
Inside the Trailer: A World Built on Mystery
The trailer opens with an atmospheric sequence — a tribal couple in a foreign land preparing to welcome their child. That opening framing immediately sets a mood of ritual, mysticism and layered storytelling — hinting that the film's horror is not going to be built on jump scares alone, but on deeper cultural, spiritual and generational undercurrents.
Mahi Enters Sindhu's World
The narrative then shifts to India, where Mahi (played by GV Prakash) is looking for a shared accommodation. He receives a call from Sindhu (played by Kayadu Lohar), who says she is staying alone in a room and is looking for a roommate. Mahi, drawn to her from the very first meeting, quickly moves into her space. He soon realises that she is beautiful, wealthy, and — for reasons he does not fully understand — an intoxicating presence in his life. He begins to imagine a future built around her.
When Love Meets the Inexplicable
But the trailer soon takes a distinctly darker turn. A series of unsettling developments begin unfolding in the flat, gradually driving Mahi to the edge of his sanity. And in one of the most intriguing narrative pivots of the trailer, it becomes clear that Sindhu herself appears to be aware of what is happening inside the flat — a knowledge that instantly reframes her entire on-screen presence and adds a layer of mystery that horror-genre lovers are likely to relish.
Censor Cleared With a 'U'
Adding a distinctive layer to its release setup is the fact that the Censor Board has cleared the film with a clean 'U' certificate. That decision is worth noting, because horror films in Indian cinema typically operate within more restrictive certifications. A 'U' rating opens the film up to a much wider audience base — including families and younger viewers — significantly expanding its potential commercial footprint.
The September 4 Release
The film is now officially slated to hit theatres on September 4, 2026. That release window places it in an active period of the Tamil cinema calendar, giving it the opportunity to benefit from strong audience footfall while also facing meaningful competitive pressure from other releases of the season.
The Long Wait Finally Ends
'Immortal' has been on the anticipation radar of Tamil audiences for a while. The makers had announced back in May of this year that shooting for the film had been wrapped up. Sources also indicated that the makers were initially intending to release the film in May itself. However, strategic release-window considerations appear to have shifted the launch date to September — giving the film additional runway to build promotional momentum and marketing visibility.
The Chill That Started It All
The film has been eagerly awaited ever since the makers released a chilling and entertaining teaser last year. That earlier teaser was widely praised for its atmospheric quality, its layered mood and its promise of a horror-thriller that combined genuine dread with narrative intrigue. The trailer released today builds meaningfully on that early promise — delivering both emotional set-up and unsettling escalation in equal measure.
The Wider Cast
Beyond GV Prakash and Kayadu Lohar, 'Immortal' also features a host of actors who add substantial texture to the film's world. The supporting cast includes TM Karthik, Kumar Natarajan, Lollu Sabha Maaran, Aaditya Kathir, Arshu Maharjan, Pema Tsamchoe and Sunita Shrestha. That inclusion of diverse talents — including performers from different regional and cultural backgrounds — reinforces the trailer's suggestion of a story that stretches across multiple geographies and cultural spaces.
Behind the Camera: The Technical Team
On the technical front, the film has been produced by Arunkumar Dhanasekaran. Cinematography is by Arun Radhakrishnan, whose lensing appears to lean into shadowy interiors, mood-heavy compositions and unsettling visual textures. The music, an especially critical element of any horror-thriller, has been composed by Sam CS — a name well-regarded within Tamil cinema for his atmospheric, mood-shaping scores. Editing is by San Lokesh, and art direction has been handled by Siva Sankar. Stunts have been choreographed by R Sakthi Saravanan, while dances are choreographed by Sabarish.
GV Prakash: The Multi-Hat Star
For GV Prakash, 'Immortal' represents another important step in his continuing evolution as an actor. Long celebrated as one of Tamil cinema's most talented music composers, GV Prakash has consistently expanded his creative canvas by embracing acting projects that push him into new genre territories. Playing the emotionally layered, escalating role of Mahi — a young man whose life takes a chilling, unimagined turn — offers him significant scope to demonstrate his acting range.
Kayadu Lohar's Central Enigma
Kayadu Lohar's Sindhu is likely to emerge as one of the most talked-about characters of the film. The trailer positions her as a figure of quiet mystery — warm, alluring and yet increasingly cryptic as the story unfolds. Roles like Sindhu, when well-executed, can define an actor's identity for years, and Kayadu's performance in this project will be closely watched by fans and critics alike.
Director Mariyappan Chinna's Vision
Anchoring the entire project is director Mariyappan Chinna. His directorial vision — evident in the trailer's atmospheric pacing, ritual-driven opening, character-first storytelling and unsettling emotional escalation — suggests a filmmaker who understands that the best horror-thrillers are built on mood, mystery and character depth, rather than on shock alone.
Why It Matters: The Return of Atmospheric Tamil Horror
Tamil cinema has a rich, respected tradition of atmospheric horror-thrillers — films that blend cultural mythology, psychological tension and character-driven storytelling. Every well-executed new entry in this genre helps sustain that tradition. 'Immortal', from what the trailer suggests, is positioning itself squarely within this atmospheric horror lineage.
The Genre Balance: Thrills and Emotion
One of the trailer's most striking qualities is its ability to blend two distinct emotional currents — the warmth of a growing romance between Mahi and Sindhu, and the escalating dread of the events unfolding around them. That kind of tonal balance — where romance and horror share the same emotional space — often produces the most memorable genre films.
Industry Impact: A Strong Genre Bet
For the film's production and distribution team, a horror-thriller with a 'U' certificate, established musical talent, culturally distinctive storytelling and strong lead performances represents a strong commercial bet. Tamil audiences have consistently responded well to atmospheric horror when it is executed with craft and character depth — and 'Immortal' appears to be leaning into those exact strengths.
The Sam CS Music Advantage
Music plays an especially critical role in horror-thrillers, and Sam CS's involvement is likely to be one of the film's key strengths. His background scores tend to intensify emotional stakes without overwhelming scenes — an important balance in a genre that thrives on suggestion, mood and mystery rather than loud spectacle alone.
Audience Sentiment: Curiosity Builds Rapidly
Reactions to the trailer across social media have been marked by intrigue, excitement and genuine curiosity. Fans have particularly praised the trailer's atmospheric quality, its layered opening, and the on-screen chemistry between GV Prakash and Kayadu Lohar. The mystery around Sindhu's character has already sparked a range of fan theories — a strong pre-release sign that the film has managed to hook its target audience emotionally.
Why It Matters: Genre Diversification in Tamil Cinema
Tamil cinema has been actively diversifying its genre pipeline in recent years — with strong entries in action, drama, comedy, romance and thriller storytelling. Every well-crafted horror-thriller adds to this widening genre spectrum, ensuring that audiences have consistent access to fresh cinematic experiences across moods and formats. 'Immortal' contributes meaningfully to that diversification.
Behind the Emotional Layer
While marketing may lead with horror and mystery, the emotional layer of 'Immortal' — Mahi's love, Sindhu's ambiguity, the couple's evolving dynamic — is likely to be one of the film's most important storytelling anchors. Audiences tend to remember horror-thrillers not just for their scares, but for the emotional relationships their scares disrupt. That emotional resonance is often what makes such films replay in viewers' minds long after the credits roll.
Industry Impact: Actor-Composers Expanding Their Craft
The continued acting momentum of composer-actors like GV Prakash also reflects a broader shift in Tamil cinema — where multi-hyphenate creators are increasingly comfortable moving fluidly between music, acting, production and beyond. That fluidity of creative identity often produces richer, more layered contributions to the industry over time.
The Dhanush Endorsement Effect
Dhanush's public endorsement of the trailer is not a small thing. As one of the most influential figures in modern Tamil cinema, his willingness to publicly wish success to a project brings both credibility and reach. It also reflects the strong personal and creative relationships that continue to define the collaborative culture of Tamil cinema.
Why It Matters: A Story That Trusts Its Atmosphere
Modern horror-thrillers often succeed not because they overwhelm audiences with visual effects, but because they trust the power of atmosphere, silence, character psychology and slow-building mystery. The trailer of 'Immortal' suggests that the film has understood this principle deeply. Whether the final film delivers on that promise will define its long-term audience impact.
What to Watch: The Countdown to September 4
Attention will now turn to the film's promotional cycle over the coming days. Cast interviews, additional character reveals, music track releases and behind-the-scenes glimpses are all likely to fuel anticipation between now and the September 4 release. For Tamil cinema fans, and particularly for horror-thriller enthusiasts, the countdown has firmly begun.
The Bigger Picture: A Confident Genre Statement
'Immortal' arrives at a moment when Indian audiences — across languages — have shown a strong appetite for well-made horror-thrillers that combine cultural specificity with universal emotional storytelling. If the film delivers on the mood, character depth and mystery that the trailer promises, it stands well-positioned to become one of the more talked-about Tamil cinema releases of this quarter.
Why It Matters: A Small But Meaningful Cultural Moment
Every atmospheric horror-thriller release in Tamil cinema is more than just a genre entry. It is a small but meaningful cultural moment — an opportunity for audiences to gather in dark auditoriums, feel their pulse quicken together, exchange glances during eerie silences and step out into the evening carrying the shared memory of a story. That collective cinematic experience continues to be one of the enduring joys of theatrical horror.
The Bigger Picture: The Enduring Power of Storytelling
Whether the story is set in a foreign land, in an urban apartment, or across generational memories, at its heart, every great horror-thriller is a story about human vulnerability, longing, mystery and fear. 'Immortal' appears to be reaching for exactly this timeless emotional territory — and if executed well, it has every chance of leaving a lasting impression on its viewers.
The Bottom Line
The trailer of 'Immortal', released by Dhanush on Wednesday, has decisively pulled Mariyappan Chinna's horror-thriller into the centre of Tamil cinema conversation. With GV Prakash and Kayadu Lohar anchoring a mysterious, atmospheric and emotionally layered story, backed by a strong supporting ensemble, a talented technical team led by cinematographer Arun Radhakrishnan and composer Sam CS, and a clean 'U' certificate that widens its audience potential, the film is arriving with genuine promise. As September 4 draws near, all eyes will be on how Mahi and Sindhu's story unfolds — a story that begins with a moment of romantic possibility and gradually descends into something far darker, stranger and deeply mysterious. If the film delivers on the mood, craft and character depth suggested by its trailer, 'Immortal' has every chance of becoming one of the more memorable atmospheric horror-thrillers Tamil cinema has offered in recent memory. And when the lights dim in cinema halls across Tamil Nadu — and beyond — on September 4, audiences will step into the world of 'Immortal' fully prepared to be drawn into its promise, its mystery and its haunting, unforgettable heart.
