Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan is preparing for the release of Meghna Gulzar's 'Daayra' — and by her own account, the film has taken her further into unfamiliar territory than any project in her career so far. Born and raised in Mumbai and having travelled extensively across India, Kareena admits she thought she had a firm grasp on both the city and the country. 'Daayra' proved otherwise.
"I was born in Mumbai. Having lived here all my life; and having travelled extensively across India, I thought I knew most of the city and the country through my life's journey so far. But the journey of Daayra took me to unseen and unvisited places. And that's just the geography," she said. It's a striking admission from a star whose relationship with Mumbai is often assumed to be exhaustive — one that immediately positions 'Daayra' as more than another film on her slate.
The Creative Frontier: Beyond Binary Thinking
The film, the 'Jab We Met' actress said, pushed her creative and social boundaries into terrain she had never accessed before. Drawing on her academic background, Kareena framed the film's essence in an unusually philosophical way.
"Daayra took my creativity to areas I have never explored before. It took my social awareness to reaches I didn't know I had. As a student of Sociology, I learned that our life and our society is not binary. It's not just black and white. There is a spectrum of grey that we exist in," she said. Referencing the cinematic universe Meghna Gulzar has built over the years, she added, "In my journey as a filmmaker — through Talvar, Raazi, Chhapaak and SamBahadur, I have cherished exploring that very grey — within characters and within the world they, and we live in. Daayra for me, not only explores that grey... It invades it... it attempts to dismantle it. And that is the irony of Daayra."
Duality at the Heart of the Story
Where 'Daayra' refuses to sit in the binary, it fully embraces duality — and Kareena laid out precisely how that duality is engineered into the film's DNA. "It is also, always dual. At its core Daayra is only about duality. And this duality is entrenched through the two main protagonists of the film. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays DCP Ajooni Kohli. DCP Raman Kumar is portrayed by Prithviraj Sukumaran."
The pairing itself is being pitched as a rare industry-crossing event. "As a casting opportunity, it was a dream come true for me. To get two prolific actors from the Hindi and Malayalam film industry to face each other off," Kareena said — a nod to Prithviraj's stature in Malayalam cinema and to how few Hindi-Malayalam pairings have been engineered at this scale.
Inspired by True Events Across India
'Daayra', Kareena revealed, is not tied to any single geography. "Daayra is a story that is inspired by not one, but several true events that have occurred across our country. Daayra is a story that takes place, not in a particular city or state of India; but does happen almost everywhere and anywhere in our country." That framing — inspired-but-not-anchored to a single case — allows the film to travel across contexts, communities and moral landscapes without being locked to one headline event.
The Ajooni Kohli Audiences Haven't Seen Before
For fans expecting a familiar Kareena, the actress has quietly warned that 'Daayra' will not deliver that. "Daayra unveils an entirely unseen facet of the actor that is Kareena Kapoor Khan. Kareena as Ajooni, is stoic, unreadable. She cracks open situations and people with a smile," she said. In contrast, Prithviraj Sukumaran's DCP Raman Kumar is described as "the hinge to Kareena's Ajooni. Seething with a caged rage. And almost never smiles."
She summed up the tonal dynamic with a striking line: "The two are the Ying and Yang of Daayra." A stoic, smiling woman cop opposite a caged, silent, seething male cop — the emotional grammar itself is unusual for a mainstream Hindi thriller.
Kareena on Meghna Gulzar
Her Instagram note added an even more personal layer to the film. "There are films you do, and then there are films that make you sit with things you may not always want to think about. Daayra and becoming ACP Ajooni Kohli, did that for me. At its heart, this film is a reality of the world we live in, but what I love about this film is that Meghna never tells us what to think. She takes us into the grey… into two people who challenge each other, reflect each other and constantly shift the way we see the story."
Praising the director, Kareena wrote: "Meghna, I'm so proud of what we've made and of the conversation you have chosen to begin with Daayra. Some stories need women behind them, women within them, and all of us willing to listen."
Why It Matters
'Daayra' arrives at a moment when Hindi cinema is being increasingly asked to move past neatly resolved narratives and confront moral complexity. Meghna Gulzar has spent much of her career doing exactly that, and pairing her sensibility with Kareena Kapoor Khan in a stoic, non-glamourised cop role — opposite Prithviraj Sukumaran in a role built on suppressed fury — signals a genuine attempt at a new kind of Hindi crime drama. One that leans into duality instead of choosing sides.
The Bigger Picture
The trailer drops on August 31, and the film releases in cinemas on September 18, 2026. Between now and then, expectations will only intensify — not just because of the star pairing, but because 'Daayra' is being framed as a film that wants to interrogate India's own greys rather than sensationalise them. If Kareena's own words are anything to go by, audiences aren't walking into a thriller. They're walking into a mirror.
