Smita Patil was first chosen for a supporting role in this film, Shabana Azmi revealed

Veteran Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi has talked about the character played by actress Smita Patil in the movie 'Arth'. In this, she revealed that Smita Patil didn't approve of the character who was previously offered to her while casting this movie, she insisted on acting out some other woman's character.

Actress Shabana Azmi discussed the casting of the movie 'Arth', produced in 1982. In an interview with Filmfare, she explained that actress Smita Patil was to play the character of a maid in the movie 'Arth', who was subsequently played by actress Rohini Hattangadi. Shabana revealed that Smita insisted on portraying the character of some other woman.

Further in the conversation, Shabana Azmi said, 'This is very interesting. Vijay Tendulkar said that this is what is wrong with 'Arth', because it is actually Pooja's story. It is the story of the wife and the other woman should have been shown enough to take the story forward. Since Smita had demanded a new role, she had to be given a lot more footage. 'Arth' was released in 1948 under the direction of Mahesh Bhatt. In this film, Shabana Azmi played the character of Pooja, who was Inder's wife. Later, Pooja comes to know that her husband, Inder, is having an affair with someone else. The name of that other woman's character was Kavita, which was played by Smita Patil. This film garnered a lot of attention. Shabana Azmi received the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
