The Bombay High Court on Tuesday, November 3, directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to re-upload a public awareness video featuring Dia Mirza that urged citizens not to burst firecrackers on public roads during Diwali. A bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Neela Gokhale expressed displeasure over the political remarks and said the campaign, launched under the court’s own pollution directions, should not be given a communal colour.
How It Began
The BMC’s campaign included messages from Dia Mirza, Madhuri Dixit, Nishigandha Wad and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane. The BMC removed Mirza’s video after Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam objected to it. In his post, he wrote that traditions are deeply rooted in culture. Mirza said she recorded the video at the request of the court and the BMC, and asked why anyone should criticise a message made in the public interest.
