Harman Baweja Co-Writes 'System' Ahead of Prime Video Debut

Producer Harman Baweja is stepping into new creative territory with System, his upcoming courtroom drama in which he serves not only as producer but also as co-writer — a dual role that marks a meaningful expansion of his identity within the Hindi film industry.

Best known for backing projects that straddle commercial appeal and social relevance, Baweja has in recent years built a producing portfolio that includes the critically noted Mrs., as well as Haq, Captain, and the mythological thriller Bhagwat: Chapter One – Rakshas. With System, he moves further along that trajectory, this time shaping the story from the page up.

"System is a film that comes from a place of genuine curiosity about how justice actually functions — or fails to function — in the real world," Baweja said in a statement shared with this publication. "Being part of the writing process allowed me to stay close to that question at every stage of the film."

Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, the filmmaker behind acclaimed productions including Nil Battey Sannata and Bareilly Ki Barfi, System is described by the production as a legal drama that examines the tension between institutional power, personal truth, and the pursuit of justice within a system that is itself deeply imperfect.

The film features a high-profile ensemble cast. Sonakshi Sinha, who recently earned widespread praise for her work in the streamer hit Dahaad, plays a central role alongside Jyothika, the Tamil cinema stalwart making a prominent Hindi OTT debut. Acclaimed filmmaker and actor Ashutosh Gowariker rounds out the key cast in a pivotal part.

The casting choices — two established female leads alongside a filmmaker-actor known for his authority on screen — suggest a narrative built on competing institutional voices, though specific plot details have not been disclosed by the production.

System is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on May 22, positioning it for a broad national and international audience across the streamer's subscriber base. The release places it in the growing catalogue of Hindi-language legal and social dramas finding significant viewership on OTT platforms, a genre that has demonstrated consistent engagement since the success of films like Section 375 and series like Criminal Justice.

For Baweja, the shift from pure producing to co-writing signals a desire for creative ownership that extends beyond logistics and financing. In an industry where the producer's role is often misunderstood as primarily financial, his move mirrors a wider trend of producers asserting narrative authorship — a development that has reshaped how projects are developed at the top end of Indian streaming content.
