Bollywood Diwali parties are usually a contest of new designer looks. Ananya Panday went the other way at Manish Malhotra's celebration in Mumbai on Thursday. She took her inspiration from one of the most-watched song sequences of the early 2000s.
The actress recreated Rani Mukerji’s look from ‘Shava Shava’, the wedding-style song from Karan Johar’s 2001 family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. On Instagram, she posted a clip of herself doing the song’s hook step. Another story, showing her posing in the outfit, was captioned “Mood tonight.”
Ananya kept the spirit of the original but updated the cut. The base was a silver-white palette with a champagne shimmer that looked warm against the soft pink backdrop of her photos.
The blouse was a structured, sweetheart-neck bralette covered in dense sequin and bead work, with a finely beaded edge. That neckline makes it feel like a 2026 piece rather than a copy of an early-2000s costume.
Instead of a flared lehenga, she wore a high-waisted, sequinned column skirt. Its fitted shape gave the outfit a more contemporary, cocktail-ready line.
A sheer ivory dupatta with light shimmer was draped loosely at her elbows instead of over the shoulder. It framed the look without hiding the embroidery.
She kept the jewellery to a few strong pieces: a delicate diamond-style necklace close to the collarbone, oversized chandelier earrings and a statement cocktail ring.
Her hair was styled in big, bouncy blowout waves with a centre parting, a nod to early-2000s glamour. Her makeup was soft glam, with defined eyes and nude-toned lips, so the outfit stayed the focus.
The overall effect is a tribute rather than a costume replica. The reference is clear, but the silhouette is current.
Why the Throwback Works
'Shava Shava' was composed by Aadesh Shrivastava and sung by Aadesh Shrivastava, Sudesh Bhosale, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Amitabh Bachchan. It is still one of the most remembered tracks from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The song featured much of the film's cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, with Rani Mukerji in a special appearance.
Ananya chose a scene that many fans already know frame by frame, which gave her outfit a story beyond the fabric. Her timing also fits a wider trend: Gen Z audiences have taken to retro Bollywood fashion, and recreated looks from the late '90s and early 2000s keep circulating on social media. Wearing the outfit to a Manish Malhotra party, a designer closely associated with Bollywood glamour, made the reference land even more neatly.
The guest list was full of stars. Madhuri Dixit came with her family, Saif Ali Khan arrived with Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Akshay Kumar was there with Twinkle Khanna and their son Aarav, along with many others from the film industry.
On a night when most guests went for new festive outfits, Ananya's nostalgic look was one of the most talked-about.
