Academy Award-winning producer Guneet Monga, known for her work in shorts, has stressed the need to select films with US distribution for Oscar consideration. "The committee here constantly feels that we should send our best film as if they are giving awards. But you have to send a film that has US distribution, that's it. It's an American award," she said.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Guneet Monga stressed the importance of having a US distributor for films to be sent for the Oscars. She said that before selecting a film for the Oscars, India needs to ensure a strong US distribution of the film. She said that it is also possible to do this process independently, but spending enough on promotion and other resources for this can be quite challenging. During this, she also expressed concern over no Indian film getting a nomination in the Oscar's Best International Feature category since Lagaan in the year 2001.
The film Laapataa Ladies, released on March 1 this year, was well received by the audience and critics. Apart from directing the film, Kiran Rao has also co-produced the film with Aamir Khan. The film stars Nitanshi Goyal, Sparsh Srivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Ravi Kishan, and others. The film tells the story of two young newlywed brides who get transformed while traveling on a train.
