Pritam and Italy's Mahmood Fuse Two Musical Worlds in Cocktail 2's New Track 'Mashooqa'
The Sicily-shot summer romance anthem is Bollywood's most ambitious cross-cultural collaboration of 2026 — but it has not arrived without controversy.
MUMBAI, May 23, 2026 — The makers of Cocktail 2 have released a new romantic track titled Mashooqa, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. National Award-winning composer Pritam collaborated with Italian artist Mahmood and singer Raghav Chaitanya to create a sound that blends Bollywood with Italian musical elements, with the film set for theatrical release on June 19.
The track arrives as the second single from a film that carries outsized expectations. Cocktail 2 is directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Maddock Films and Luv Films, and is a spiritual sequel to Adajania's 2012 romantic comedy Cocktail, starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty — a film whose soundtrack was also composed by Pritam. The new instalment stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna.
A Rare Bollywood-Italy Creative Partnership
Mahmood co-composed the song and wrote and sang its Italian portions, while Raghav Chaitanya added the Hindi vocal flavour to the track. The lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, and the track also features vocals from singer Ruaa Kayy.
For Pritam, the international dimension of the collaboration was inseparable from the song's visual setting. "Mashooqa, which is shot in Sicily, is made more real and relatable by immensely talented Italian artist Mahmood, whose voice's texture and singing style elevated the song to another level," the composer said in a statement.
Mahmood, for his part, described stepping into Bollywood's orbit as a long-held ambition. "I've always been fascinated by the world of Bollywood, the way music, cinema and emotion become one powerful language," he said. "And knowing that some scenes were shot in Sicily makes it even more meaningful — I love the idea of two worlds so rich in culture and emotion meeting through music and cinema."
Who Is Mahmood?
The collaboration carries genuine international weight. Mahmood has won the Sanremo Music Festival twice — in 2019 with the song Soldi and in 2022 alongside Blanco with Brividi — and his Sanremo victories allowed him to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in those respective years, finishing second in 2019 and sixth in 2022.
His song Soldi topped the charts in Greece, Israel, Italy, and Lithuania and reached the top 10 in five additional countries, eventually becoming the most-streamed Eurovision song ever on Spotify — a record it held for nearly two years. His involvement in Mashooqa marks his first foray into Hindi film music.
Audience Response and Streaming Activity
After dominating playlists with Jab Talak, the makers of Cocktail 2 have unveiled Mashooqa, a glamorous summer romance anthem already taking over streaming platforms and social media. Raghav Chaitanya noted that the audience reaction had exceeded expectations. "The audience response has been overwhelming, and it's amazing to see people instantly connect with the song's energy and flavour," he said.
However, the reception has not been uniformly positive. Some observers have described the song's visuals as ordinary and the overall composition as routine. Separately, social media users claimed the song's tune was lifted from a 1993 Italian track, Se So Arrubate A Nonna, a Neapolitan song by Italian duo Bibi and Coco. The controversy erupted after a Reddit user shared a comparison video, and the online debate also saw several users revisiting older plagiarism allegations against Pritam. Pritam has publicly refuted the allegations, though the team has not issued a formal legal response as of publication time.
Broader Context: Bollywood Goes Global
Mashooqa arrives during a broader industry push toward cross-border music collaborations. At a time when global collaborations are reshaping music consumption habits, the track proves that Bollywood music can embrace international artistry while still retaining its emotional desi core.
Cocktail 2 will hit theatres on June 19, with its music distributed under Universal Music. With the film's music rollout continuing, the production appears to be using its soundtrack as a primary marketing vehicle — a strategy consistent with Maddock Films' recent releases.
