Actress Anupama Parameswaran rarely says much about her private life, which is why her latest Instagram story stood out. In a long, reflective note shared on Saturday, the actress wrote about the double standards she says she lived through, and about the online comparisons she says she is now tired of.
The post comes shortly after Anupama ended a relationship that she had earlier said took a heavy toll on her well-being. She did not name anyone in the note. Her words, though, left little doubt that she was writing from personal experience.
“The things you were once made to feel guilty about have a funny way of becoming perfectly normal when the roles are reversed,” she wrote.
She went on to describe how ordinary moments, such as being happy, thanking the people who support her, or enjoying small things in life, had been made to feel like mistakes. She wrote about being made to “question your intentions, explain yourself endlessly,” and to feel guilty “for things that never deserved an apology in the first place.”
Then she described the reversal. “And then, one fine day, you watch those very same things being done so effortlessly, so publicly, and with absolutely no hesitation. Suddenly, the rules are different,” she wrote. Her conclusion was the line that has drawn the most attention: “It was never really about what you did. It was about who was allowed to do it.”
More than just a cryptic post
Social media treats posts like this as clues, and fans and gossip pages tend to go looking for a target. But Anupama’s note is not mainly an accusation. It is about a pattern many people will know from their own lives: a partner or social circle that polices one person’s behaviour while excusing the same behaviour in someone else.
She also called out people who judge from outside. “Perhaps the most interesting part is watching people form conclusions from the little they see, without ever knowing what happened behind the scenes,” she wrote, adding that some ironies “speak for themselves.”

Saying no to the comment-section scoreboard
The second half of her note was aimed at fans. In recent weeks, some followers have apparently been comparing her online activity with others’, tracking whose comments and stories got replies. Anupama made it clear she wants that to stop.
“Please stop tagging or messaging me with comparisons about who replied to whose comments or stories,” she wrote. She said she has interacted with her followers for years, “not something I discovered yesterday,” and will keep doing so when she has “the time and mental space.”
“Love and gratitude don’t need to be constantly performed to be real,” she added. She also reminded followers that she is human, “with responsibilities and battles beyond social media.”
Why it resonates
For actors in the South industry, where fan culture is intense and every like and reply gets analysed, this is an unusually open boundary to set. Anupama has a large following across Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil cinema. With this post, she has made a point that goes beyond any one relationship: she will engage with fans because she wants to, not because she is under pressure to prove something.
Her note shows how little control celebrities have over the stories that grow around their breakups, and how setting boundaries has become part of protecting their peace.
