Sai Pallavi has built her career on women who feel real rather than decorative. In ‘Om’, she is trading that quiet intensity for a badge, and she says the role is closer to her than it looks.
On Monday, the makers of director Rajkumar Periasamy’s action entertainer ‘Om’ revealed that Sai Pallavi plays Nithya Reddy, an IPS officer. Sharing the character introduction video on X, Periasamy wrote, “HER! The PERFORMER @Sai_Pallavi92, You will never cease to amaze! Here’s #SaiPallavi as #NithyaReddy, IPS, Naidupeta Ammayi frOM #OM.”
Sai Pallavi replied, “Dear @Rajkumar_KP sir, Thank you so much for choosing me again and this time play to play Nithya Reddy! I see my alter ego in her.”
Who Is Nithya Reddy?
According to the video, Nithya Reddy is an Andhra Pradesh cadre officer who, after serving with the Andhra Pradesh Police, is inducted into the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as Additional Superintendent to work with Interpol. Her seniors rate her highly for being honest, smart and experienced at a young age. Most importantly, she is the one running operation ‘OM’.
That detail changes how fans read the film. ‘Om’ isn’t positioning its heroine as a love interest on the side of a mass hero’s story. She is the person in charge of the operation the film is named after.
Why the Amaran Reunion Matters
Periasamy and Sai Pallavi previously worked together on ‘Amaran’, and her reply, “choosing me again,” highlights that trust. Directors returning to the same actor usually signal confidence that she can carry weight in a big film, and ‘Om’ is a big one. Wunderbar Films Head Sreyas has said it will be one of the biggest budget films of Dhanush’s career, and that it will bring back the “mass vintage Dhanush” fans have been waiting for.
The title teaser set the story in the world of red sanders cutting. Dhanush plays a woodcutter, and the teaser showed police rounding up workers chopping red sanders illegally and holding them at gunpoint, before Dhanush arrives to rescue them. With Sai Pallavi now confirmed as the officer leading the operation, a cop-versus-woodcutter equation looks set to drive the drama.
A Stacked Cast and a Careful Release Plan
The film is Dhanush and Mammootty’s first project together. Periasamy revealed at the June title teaser launch that Mammootty plays Karthikeyan, and that 60 to 65 per cent of filming had been completed then. The unit recently shot in Malaysia, where Mammootty celebrated his National Award win with fellow winners Dhanush, Periasamy and editor Kalaivanan. Naseeruddin Shah is also part of the film, and Sreeleela is the second heroine. The ‘Chapter 1’ tagline hints at a sequel.
‘Om’ was originally scheduled for October 16, but Dhanush announced a postponement out of respect for Superstar Rajinikanth, whose ‘Jailer 2’ released on October 15. He also ruled out a Deepavali release since Suriya’s film had already claimed that date, before fixing November 20.
The crew includes music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by Ezhil Arasu, editing by Kalaivanan R and costumes by Kavya Sriram.
What Comes Next
With the hero, the veteran and now the officer revealed, ‘Om’ has its three pillars in place. Expect a trailer to follow as the countdown to November 20 begins.
