"Zabardasti Ke Agents": Kunal Kemmu And Preity Zinta's Vibe Trailer Blends Spy Thrills With Comic Chaos
Actor-director Kunal Kemmu is back behind the camera with his second directorial venture, "Vibe," and the film's newly released trailer suggests a tonal shift from his 2024 directorial debut, "Madgaon Express." Where his first film leaned into friendship-driven comedy set against a travel backdrop, "Vibe" ventures into spy-thriller territory wrapped in broad comic chaos - a combination the trailer, unveiled on Wednesday, wastes no time establishing.
What The Trailer Reveals
Running two minutes and 44 seconds, the trailer introduces audiences to Hardik (played by Kunal Kemmu) and his best friend Bugs (Sparsh Shrivastava) - two ordinary, rather clueless men whose uneventful lives take an unexpected turn when they find themselves caught in the middle of a massive conspiracy threatening the country. Far from the natural choice for any high-stakes mission, the pair are nonetheless pushed into becoming reluctant, accidental agents, with the nation's fate strangely resting in their unprepared hands.
Guiding them through this chaos is Preity Zinta's character, a sharp, no-nonsense spy tasked with training the two into shape for the mission. The trailer offers glimpses of Zinta in a distinctly action-oriented avatar while still allowing her trademark comic timing and screen presence to come through, positioning her character as the commanding contrast to the duo's obvious unpreparedness. Adding a romantic thread to the mix, actress Vanshika Dhir appears as Kunal's love interest in the film, while veteran actress Sharmila Tagore - Kunal's real-life mother-in-law - also makes an appearance, drawing extra attention from fans. The supporting cast further includes Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirahua, and actor Yashpal Sharma.
For each of the film's leads, "Vibe" represents something of a departure. Sparsh Shrivastava, who earned widespread acclaim for his understated, serious performance in "Laapataa Ladies," steps into full-blown comedic territory for what appears to be the first time in a major role - a shift the trailer hints he navigates with noticeable ease. For Preity Zinta, the film marks a return to a very different register after her recent work in the drama "Partition 1947," allowing her to explore an energetic, action-driven character that she has described as distinctly her own.
Speaking about her role, Zinta said her character has "an energy that is completely her own," describing her as someone who "loves her country and will go to any lengths to protect it," using whatever means necessary to get the job done. She also praised Kemmu's clarity as a director, noting that working on the "mad film" felt like an adventure where the next day's surprises always seemed fitting for a film titled "Vibe."
Why It Matters: Kemmu's Evolving Directorial Voice
Kemmu, who wrote, directed, and co-produced the film under his banner Drongo Films alongside Chirag Nihalani, has spoken about the challenge of balancing multiple roles on the project - acting in it while simultaneously steering its writing, direction, and production. He described the experience as one of constantly shifting between "different versions of the same madness," crediting his co-stars for bringing distinct energies to the ensemble that made the film's dynamics increasingly fun to develop over the course of the shoot. He also expressed gratitude for partnering with Amazon MGM Studios India, which presents the film, calling it the ideal collaborator for bringing "Vibe" to the big screen.
With its blend of spy-thriller stakes and broad physical comedy, "Vibe" is positioning itself as counter-programming to the more serious, high-intensity action dramas that have dominated recent box office conversations in Hindi cinema. Its September 18 release places it in a competitive theatrical window, but the combination of Kemmu's established comic sensibility, Zinta's star pull, and Shrivastava's rising post-"Laapataa Ladies" profile gives the film a distinct enough identity to stand out. As anticipation builds ahead of its release, all eyes will be on whether "Vibe" can replicate the audience goodwill Kemmu earned with his directorial debut.
