Ram Gopal Varma, the filmmaker behind cult gangster dramas like ‘Satya’ and ‘Company’, is going back to the world that made him famous, but this time from the other side of the law. The director has announced ‘Police Company’, a film about Mumbai’s encounter cops, and has now explained the thinking behind its unusual title.
Explaining the title on X, Varma wrote, “The police is an institution and a company is a money making organisation. But when its powers go beyond a point, an institution will become a company. Hence the name Police Company.”
The title is a clear nod to his 2002 film ‘Company’, which explored the inner workings of the Mumbai underworld, often linked in public imagination to the D Company. This time, Varma flips the story to show the police force that fought it.
‘More Dangerous Than D Company’
Announcing the release date, the director shared a poster with a striking message: “To be violent is their qualification. Fear is their procedure. Hunting criminals is their job. And they don’t file FIR’S. They just KILL to close the case. POLICE COMPANY. It’s employees are more dangerous than the D COMPANY employees. T SERIES presents A RAM GOPAL VARMA FILM. In cinemas JUNE 4th 2027.”
He added, “POLICE COMPANY was more dangerous than D Company because in between 1997 and 2004, it killed 319 gangsters. They all are coming to kill everyone. In cinemas on 4th June, 2027.”
Harshvardhan Rane as Daya Nayak
The film stars Harshvardhan Rane as Daya Nayak, one of Mumbai’s best-known encounter specialists. “POLICE COMPANY produced by T series featuring Harshvardhan Rane as Mumbai’s legendary encounter cop Daya Nayak, is inspired by true events set against the most violent chapter ever in the underworld of Mumbai,” Varma wrote.
He said the film will “expose the other side of the criminal world which is the police world which in effect is the other side of ‘Company’,” and will tell the story of the circumstances that led to the killing of around 300 gangsters between 1997 and 2004.
A Familiar World for RGV
This is not the first time Varma has been linked to the encounter-cop era. He produced ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’ (2004), whose lead character was widely seen as inspired by Daya Nayak. More than two decades later, he is returning to that chapter of Mumbai’s history as director.
Why It Matters
The late 1990s and early 2000s were a violent time in Mumbai, when police encounters were used against the underworld. Those encounters were celebrated by some and questioned by others for bypassing the legal process. How the film balances action, heroism and these difficult questions will shape how audiences receive it.
A Big Moment for Harshvardhan Rane
Fresh from the success of ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’, Harshvardhan Rane steps into a gritty, real-life role, a major test of his range as a leading man.
