Most film songs are popular for a season. 'Zinda' has lasted much longer. More than a decade after 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' reached theatres, a packed arena sang its hook line back to the man who played Milkha Singh on screen.
Farhan Akhtar, actor, singer and filmmaker, shared the moment on Instagram. The monochrome video, filmed from the stage, shows the audience carrying the song in unison while Farhan joins in between lines. For an artist who has spent years building a parallel career as a live performer, it was the kind of response that confirms the effort.
"The moment a song leaves the stage and becomes a collective pulse across the entire arena, it's pure magic. Chills down the spine, every single time. An unforgettable crowd. #FarhanLive," he wrote in the caption.
Why 'Zinda' Still Hits Hard
'Zinda' was never meant to be a concert singalong. In the film it plays as a defiant, almost aggressive declaration of will, the sound of an athlete pushing his body past its limits. Siddharth Mahadevan's raw vocals and Shankar Ehsaan Loy's driving composition made it the emotional engine of the film.
That a crowd now chants it for fun shows how far the song has moved beyond the film. It has become a workout staple, a motivational track and, as Farhan's video shows, a live favourite that needs no introduction. When fans sing a song like this without being asked, it means it has become part of their own lives.
The Film Behind the Anthem
Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is a biographical sports drama based on the life of Milkha Singh, the Indian athlete and Olympian who was a Commonwealth Games champion and a two-time 400m champion at the Asian Games. Farhan led the cast alongside Art Malik, Divya Dutta, Pavan Malhotra, Yograj Singh, Prakash Raj and Meesha Shafi, with Sonam Kapoor in a special appearance.
The film was inspired by 'The Race of My Life'. In a gesture that is still remembered, Milkha Singh sold the film rights for one rupee and added a clause that a share of the profits would go to the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust.
Farhan's own career covers both sides of the camera. He made his directorial debut with 'Dil Chahta Hai' in 2001, a coming-of-age film that has since become a cult classic, and went on to direct the war film 'Lakshya', the action thriller 'Don' and its sequel 'Don 2'.
On the acting front, he was last seen in '120 Bahadur', directed by Razneesh 'Razy' Ghai, in which he plays Major Shaitan Singh, with Raashii Khanna also in the cast. The film recounts the Battle of Rezang La, fought on 18 November 1962 and considered one of the major events of the Sino-Indian War. In that battle, 120 soldiers of the Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon Regiment, made up of Ahirs, defended their post against a 3000-strong Chinese Army contingent and inflicted over 1300 casualties.
From Milkha Singh to Major Shaitan Singh, Farhan keeps returning to stories of extraordinary courage. On a concert night, the audience joined him in celebrating one of them.
