Playback singer Neeti Mohan has opened her heart once again about the loss of her father, Brij Mohan Sharma, in a deeply personal Instagram post that reads less like a farewell and more like a thank-you letter.
Opening with the Hindi line "माँ धरती है तो पिता आसमान" (if a mother is the earth, a father is the sky), Neeti described her father as someone now "smiling up in heaven," while the family finds comfort "looking at the skies."
Brij Mohan Sharma passed away on October 15, 2026. The family first shared the news on October 18, and condolences poured in from the music and film fraternity, including singer Shreya Ghoshal. Neeti's new note comes in the weeks since and turns the family's grief into a tribute to the kind of parent he was.
A father who refused to set limits
The most striking part of Neeti's message is how she credits her father's parenting. She wrote that he encouraged his daughters "to not just excel in academics but in extra-curricular activities too," and called him "an inspiration to all the fathers, especially fathers of daughters."
Those words carry extra weight because of how the Mohan sisters turned out. Brij Mohan Sharma, a government officer and a writer, raised four daughters: Neeti, Shakti, Mukti and Kriti. Neeti became one of Bollywood's best-known playback voices, while Shakti and Mukti made their names as dancers and television personalities. In a country where daughters are still often steered toward "safe" career choices, his decision to back music, dance and the stage stands out.
Neeti has spoken about this before. As a judge on a reality show, she once said her father taught his daughters never to worry about what society would say and never to tolerate anything wrong. His creative side also showed in her work: her early single "Ja Ja" was written with his help, and in 2019 she shared a poem he wrote for her after her wedding.
Lessons taught through action
In her note, Neeti said the values he passed on "matter even more now" because he taught them "through your words and, more importantly, through your actions." She added that while his absence "can never be filled," his voice still "echoes" in her ears and his teachings guide the family's decisions.
The family's bond with him has been visible to fans for years. During Neeti's 2019 wedding to actor Nihaar Pandya, her father was rushed to the ICU and could not attend the ceremony, and her mother performed the kanyadaan instead. The sisters have often called him the anchor of the family since then.
A promise to carry the legacy forward
Neeti closed the note with a promise that the family will remain "grounded in our values, strong through life's challenges, kind at heart and united as a family." She signed off: "Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our guiding star."
For fans who have followed the Mohan sisters' journey, the post explains a lot about where their confidence and drive came from. It also turns a private loss into a message that will speak to many families: raising a daughter without limits can be a parent's greatest legacy.
