What should have been a celebratory night for Bollywood music has turned into one of the season’s most talked-about live-event controversies. Celebrity photographer and director Ritesh Krishnan has publicly called out the organisers of the Bollywood Music Project (BMP) after his wife, singer Shilpa Rao, was allegedly cut off mid-goodbye at the festival’s Mumbai edition.
The incident took place during the 10th anniversary edition of the Bollywood Music Project (BMP) in Mumbai on October 24. Shilpa was performing when her microphone and stage lights were reportedly switched off before she could properly conclude her set. Videos that surfaced online showed the singer unable to finish thanking the audience as she was rushed off the stage, with the Kutle Khan Project starting its performance while Shilpa was still at one end of the stage. Reports attributed the cut to scheduling delays.
A Husband’s Note That Struck a Chord
In a strongly worded note on Instagram, Ritesh wrote that he felt angry, disappointed and helpless, adding that it hurt to see “someone I love and admire so deeply” go through the ordeal. He reminded fans that while people know Shilpa as the voice behind some of Bollywood’s most beautiful songs, he knows “the woman behind that voice” and how much her audience means to her.
