On Shah Rukh Khan's birthday, the most talked-about wishes didn't come from new stars. They came from the actors who grew up in the industry alongside him.
As SRK turned 61 on Monday, Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor turned to old photographs, and both posts were a reminder of how long these friendships go back.
Ajay kept it simple. He shared a vintage picture of himself and Shah Rukh posing in black leather jackets and blue denims, the kind of styling that defined Bollywood in its heyday. His caption was a play on words: "Picture purani hai aur dosti bhi... Happy Birthday, Shah Rukh!"
The line works because it is true. Ajay and SRK became stars in the same era, often competed at the box office and built very different screen images. Behind all that is a long acquaintance that Ajay chose to celebrate with one photograph.
Anil Kapoor, who is known for his boundless energy, wrote a longer and more playful note while sharing a string of throwback memories with the superstar. "Happy Birthday, Shahrukh! Years of laughter, countless memories and you haven't lost an ounce of that charm or madness and clearly neither of us is counting the years. Here's to many more. Jaldi milte hai, Lots of love always!"
The joke about not counting the years suits both of them. Anil and SRK shared the screen in Trimurti (1995), which also starred Jackie Shroff, and three decades later neither shows any sign of slowing down.
The birthday surprise from SRK's side
While friends were sending wishes, Shah Rukh gave his fans a gift of his own. He unveiled 'Tu Mil Jaaye', the first track from his upcoming action film King.
The romantic song features SRK with Deepika Padukone, a pairing audiences have welcomed again and again. It also has an unusual mix of voices. Arijit Singh sings the melody, and global pop star Ed Sheeran adds an English rap that he wrote himself. Sachin-Jigar composed the music, Kumaar wrote the lyrics, and Piyush-Shazia choreographed it.
King is directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment in collaboration with Marflix Pictures. The cast includes Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhay Verma and Arshad Warsi in pivotal roles.
Together, the throwbacks and the new song capture where SRK stands at 61. His contemporaries are celebrating three decades of friendship, and he is releasing new music from one of his biggest upcoming films on the same day.
