Kareena took to her Instagram Stories to repost a video featuring Lionel Messi — a compilation showcasing some of the most memorable moments from the football legend's illustrious international career.
Sharing her admiration for the Argentine star, she captioned the post: "Number 10 forever," followed by red heart emojis.
That short, unmistakable tribute — Number 10 forever — is exactly the kind of message that only a footballing icon of Messi's stature can inspire. It said everything without needing to say much at all.
A Heartbroken Young Fan at Home
Alongside her Messi tribute, Kareena also shared a candid picture of her son posing with his back towards the camera. He was seen wearing a blue jersey with Messi's iconic number 10 on it — clearly cherishing the connection with his footballing hero even as the retirement news landed.
In keeping with her characteristic protectiveness around her children, Kareena did not identify which of her sons — elder Taimur or younger Jeh — was in the photo. Both boys had famously met Messi during his December 2025 Mumbai visit, and both had been seen wearing number 10 jerseys during that unforgettable occasion.
That thoughtful privacy choice reflects the same parenting sensibility Kareena has consistently modelled — sharing meaningful family moments without over-exposing her children.
The Bollywood Reaction
The 'Udta Punjab' actress was among the many Indian celebrities who reacted to Lionel Messi's retirement announcement. She also expressed her admiration for the football legend by dropping several red heart emojis in the comments section of Messi's Instagram post — a small but heartfelt gesture that placed her among the countless fans across the world offering their tributes to the icon.
The December 2025 Mumbai Memory
Interestingly, Kareena and her sons had a truly special personal encounter with Messi during the Argentine footballer's three-day promotional visit to India in December 2025.
The actress had shared a series of memorable pictures from her meeting with Messi on social media at the time, giving fans a glimpse of the football icon posing warmly with her two boys.
Kareena had taken her sons, Taimur and Jeh, to a special meet-and-greet with the football legend. The actress was spotted leaving Wankhede Stadium after meeting the Argentine star. Before the meeting, she had shared a picture on her Instagram Stories featuring herself and her two sons with their backs to the camera — Taimur wearing a jersey with Messi's name, and Jeh in an Argentina jersey.
Messi had arrived in Mumbai as part of his India tour, and the visit created some of the most memorable celebrity-footballer moments India had seen in years. For any young football fan whose favourite player is Lionel Messi, that meeting would be an unforgettable memory. For Kareena's sons — clearly among his most devoted young fans — the memory now carries even more emotional weight following the retirement announcement.
The Retirement Announcement
Lionel Messi's retirement announcement on August 31 has sparked an outpouring of emotions from footballers, fans and celebrities across the globe. The 39-year-old Argentine icon confirmed via his Instagram account that he was stepping away from international football after 21 years of national-team duty.
"It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deeply — but I understand that the time has come," Messi wrote in his announcement.
Messi finishes his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina — including 21 World Cup goals across six tournaments. His crowning achievement remains the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, which secured his place among the greatest footballers in the history of the game. His international journey concluded with the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain — an emotional final chapter that did not diminish the extraordinary legacy he built over more than two decades of national-team football.
Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, ensuring fans across the world will still get to watch him play at the highest level for a few more years.
Why It Matters
Lionel Messi's retirement from international football is not just a sports story. It is a cultural moment felt across generations, geographies and fan communities. For millions of football fans — from children just discovering the game to lifelong followers who have watched Messi's entire career — the news carries genuine emotional weight.
For India specifically, where football fandom has grown dramatically over the past decade and where Messi enjoys a particularly passionate fan base, the retirement lands with additional emotional resonance. When Messi visited Mumbai in December 2025, the scale and warmth of his reception made it clear just how deep his connection with Indian fans really is.
Cultural Impact
Kareena's sweet post about her son's heartbreak captured something universally true. Sports icons like Lionel Messi shape childhoods. They inspire dreams. They become woven into family conversations, weekend viewing schedules and everyday moments of joy. When a hero of that stature steps away from the game — even partially — young fans feel it deeply.
That's why celebrity fan reactions like Kareena's matter. They remind audiences that behind every mega-star and their globally recognised family, sit ordinary human moments — a young boy in his football jersey, quietly heartbroken because his hero is stepping away from the international stage.
The Bigger Picture
Kareena Kapoor Khan's Monday post is a beautiful example of what makes celebrity family moments genuinely relatable. A young boy in a Messi jersey. A mother acknowledging his sadness. A tribute video shared. And a simple, powerful three-word caption — Number 10 forever — that echoed the emotions of millions of Messi fans across the world.
For Lionel Messi, this chapter closing marks the end of an extraordinary international journey — one filled with heartbreak, redemption, resilience and ultimately, the triumph of lifting the World Cup for Argentina. His legacy at the international level is now permanently sealed as one of the greatest ever.
For fans everywhere — including young boys like Kareena's sons who wore his jersey with pride when they met him, and continue to wear it as they process this news — Messi will always remain something more than a footballer. He will remain a symbol of belief, of perseverance, and of what it means to give everything to the game and the jersey you love.
As football fans around the world begin to come to terms with the reality of Messi never again wearing the Argentina jersey in a competitive international match, moments like Kareena's Instagram tribute offer exactly the kind of shared emotional space this news requires.
Because as Kareena so simply put it — regardless of trophies won, records set, or matches played — Lionel Messi will always be, in the hearts of fans everywhere, Number 10 forever. And on Monday, from a young football fan's heartbroken corner of Mumbai to the millions of fans across the globe echoing the same sentiment, that truth found expression in exactly the way it needed to.
