Actor-turned-politician Vijay's much-anticipated final film as a performer, "Jana Nayagan," could hit theatres this July, according to industry sources. The action drama, directed by H. Vinoth, has been stuck in limbo for months over Censor Board clearance issues.
Word from within the industry suggests that the certification hurdle is close to being sorted out. With that resolution reportedly in sight, the film's makers are now weighing a July release window. That said, nothing has been confirmed officially yet — no date has been locked in by the production team.
The film carries extra weight because it marks Vijay's swan song as an actor before he shifted his focus entirely to politics. Fans and trade watchers had circled January 9 on their calendars, when "Jana Nayagan" was originally set to open during Pongal. Those plans fell apart after the Censor Board sent the film to a Revising Committee under Rule 24 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, effectively stalling its path to release.
That delay has dragged on for months. The film was first submitted for certification back in December, and the board still hasn't granted clearance.
On the creative side, "Jana Nayagan" brings together a stacked cast list. Alongside Vijay, the film features Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, and Gautham Vasudev Menon, with H. Vinoth directing.
When the January postponement was first announced, production house KVN Productions didn't hide its disappointment. In a statement at the time, the company said it was sharing the update "with a heavy heart," adding that the January 9 release had to be pushed back "due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control."
The studio also tried to reassure fans that the wait wouldn't be indefinite. It acknowledged the scale of anticipation building around the project, calling the postponement a difficult call for everyone involved, and promised a new date would come "at the earliest." KVN Productions asked audiences for patience in the meantime, thanking them for what it described as unwavering support.
For now, all eyes remain on the Censor Board. Once clearance comes through, an official announcement on the release date is expected to follow — and if industry buzz holds up, that could mean a July arrival for one of the year's most-watched Tamil releases.
