Academy Tightens AI Rules: Only Human Performances Eligible for Oscars
Oscars rules updated: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has created new rules to curb films made with AI. It has also made changes to several other categories.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made some major changes to its Oscar rules. They have made it clear how AI can be used in films. Some category rules have been modified. Let's take a look at them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in its new announcement, the Academy stated that films made using AI will not be eligible for awards. Only films with human acting will be eligible. This move comes after growing questions about the use of AI in films.
The Academy added that only scripts written by humans would be eligible for nomination in the writing category. The organization also noted that it may request further information from the filmmakers on their use of AI.
Significant changes have been made to the International Feature Film category. Previously, each country could submit only one film for consideration. Now, films can also qualify by winning top awards at major global film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, Toronto, Venice, and Busan. This means that more than one film from the same country will have a chance to enter the race.
Another major change is that the award in this category will now be given to the film's director instead of the country. A major change in the acting category is that actors can now receive multiple nominations for different performances in the same category. Previously, only one performance by an actor could be nominated.
