Adrija Roy: Genuine Friendships Hard to Find in Showbiz
Anupamaa actress Adrija Roy says genuine friendships are rare in the competitive entertainment industry and values her childhood bonds in Kolkata.
Mumbai, Aug 2 — Actress Adrija Roy, currently playing the role of Raahi in Anupamaa, has spoken about the difficulty of building genuine friendships in the entertainment industry.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, she said finding people with whom one can establish trust and honesty is not always easy. Roy admitted she does not have many friends from the industry, noting that the competitive nature of the profession often makes it challenging to form deep and lasting bonds. True friendships, she emphasised, require time, consistency, mutual respect and sincerity.
“I don’t have many friends from the industry. I’m not saying it’s impossible to find genuine people here, but it’s definitely not easy. This profession is naturally competitive, and trust takes time to build. Real friendships need honesty, consistency, and mutual respect,” she said.
She added that the quality of friendships matters more than their number. “I’ve always believed that it’s not about the number of friends you have but the quality of those friendships. My circle is actually quite small, and most of my closest friends are back in Kolkata. They’re not from the entertainment industry—they’re my childhood friends who have known me long before acting became a part of my life. With them, I can be completely myself, and that’s something I truly value.”
On the occasion of Friendship Day, Roy spoke about a friend who has stood by her through every phase of life. She described her bond with Rimpa as one that has become like family.
“She’s more like my sister than my friend. We’ve literally grown up together, and during some of the toughest phases of my life, she never left my side. She didn’t always have to say the right words or solve my problems. She simply stayed. Her constant support, unconditional love, and unwavering belief in me are things I’ll never forget.”
The actress also noted that maintaining relationships amid hectic shooting schedules requires consistent effort. Friendships, she said, do not always need grand gestures; a simple phone call, video chat or thoughtful message can help someone feel valued and remembered.
Roy is best known for her work in shows such as Potol Kumar Gaanwala, Durga Aur Charu, Imlie and Kundali Bhagya. Her remarks reflect a preference for long-standing personal connections formed outside the industry over the more transient relationships that can develop within it.
