For seasons, viewers have watched Badshah and Shreya Ghoshal joke and react together at the Indian Idol judges' table. Now that friendship has turned into a song. The rapper and the singer have released 'Mahiya', an upbeat romantic track with Avneet Kaur in the video. It is one of the more surprising pairings in Hindi pop this season.
The song's tagline sums up the idea: 'He is chaos, she is magic. This was never supposed to happen.' According to a statement, 'Mahiya' is meant to mix Badshah's familiar urban groove with the timeless quality of Shreya Ghoshal's voice.
Badshah is best known for party anthems and club tracks, so 'Mahiya' is a clear change of direction. He composed and wrote the single himself, which makes his romantic turn a personal choice and not just a guest feature. Hitmaker Hiten produced the music.
"Everyone knows Shreyaji as the queen of romance, and our camaraderie on the Indian Idol set has always been incredible. But taking that energy into the studio for this track was an entirely different experience," Badshah said in a statement.
He described the song as a balance of moods: "'Mahiya' is the kind of song that stays with you long after the first listen. It holds a beautiful balance of longing, love and celebration. It truly feels like a crossover of two different musical universes coming together to tell a universal love story."
Shreya Ghoshal said the collaboration was something both of them had wanted for a long time. "We've shared so many amazing moments while judging together, but collaborating on an actual song was long overdue. Badshah has brought a completely refreshing perspective to 'Mahiya'," she said. "The track beautifully blends intense emotion with contemporary arrangements, and I think fans are going to love this side of him."
Avneet Kaur's dream project
Avneet Kaur leads the video, and for her the project is also a fan moment. "I've grown up listening to Shreya ma'am's songs and have followed Badshah bhai's music for years, so being a part of a project that brings their talent together is incredibly special for me. To share the screen in a song featuring two artists whose music I've admired for so long is a feeling I'll always cherish," she said.
She also praised the directors: "Piyush and Shazia have brought the song to life beautifully through their choreography, adding to its charm and emotion. The entire experience has been memorable, and the energy on set made it even more special."
Piyush–Shazia have built the video on a large, dreamy set, with futuristic car-inspired visuals and glowing night-sky backdrops. The look suits a song that tries to sound both modern and romantic.
Why this pairing matters
Reality-show friendships are often limited to TV promos. 'Mahiya' takes the Badshah–Shreya friendship into an actual song, which gives fans of the show a new reason to listen. For the music industry, it is another sign that mainstream rap and classic Bollywood-style romantic singing can work well together. Pairings like this can bring together very different groups of listeners.
"I can't wait for audiences to experience 'Mahiya' and connect with the love and emotions we've tried to bring to it. I hope the song finds a place in people's hearts and becomes a part of their own love stories," Avneet added.
