Pongal has always been the busiest weekend on the Tamil film calendar, and next year a digital creator will be testing his popularity there. Vels Film International released the teaser of 'Dayangaram' on Tuesday and confirmed that YouTuber VJ Siddhu's debut feature will reach theatres during the harvest-festival window.
The production house announced it on social media in a playful local-slang style: "Pongal virunthuku ready aagunga prandsss... #DayangaramPongal." Roughly, it invites fans to get ready for a Pongal feast, which is how Siddhu talks to his online audience.
What makes 'Dayangaram' interesting is that Siddhu is doing both jobs. He directs the film and also plays the lead. Sources close to the unit had said the film was shot in only 49 days. The team wrapped filming in July, and post-production started soon after and has moved at full pace since then. The film's costume designer, Keerthi Vasan, announced the wrap on Instagram, and Siddhu shared that post as a story.
The project has moved steadily. In late November last year, Vels Film International announced that the first schedule was done with the post, "A step closer to the big screens! #Dayangaram first schedule wrapped." The tight schedule suggests a debutant who planned the shoot carefully, which producers notice when they decide whether to back first-time directors.
Siddhu also has an experienced technical team. Siddhu Kumar has composed the music and Dinesh Krishnan is behind the camera. Pradeep E Ragav is editing and Vinoth Raj Kumar is the art director.
The film's promotion started with humour. Actor Dhanush released the announcement video in May last year, and it spread because it was funny. In the sketch, Siddhu and his father go to meet producer Ishari K Ganesh, founder and chancellor of Vels University, and end up waiting with parents who are there for college admissions. The producer keeps asking about Siddhu's school marks until he realises the young man has come for a film, not a seat in a course. He remarks, "Usually, kids bring their dad along with them when they come for college admissions. Do people bring their dads along to ask for a chance to make a movie?"
The video then shows Siddhu's friends answering the producer's call on his phone and nearly costing him the deal with their pranks. It ends with a pun. The producer asks for a "bayangaram" (fear-inducing) title, and Siddhu offers 'Dayangaram' instead.
Why this Pongal release matters
For Tamil cinema, 'Dayangaram' is more than one debut. It is a test of whether a YouTube creator's online following will buy tickets on one of the most competitive weekends of the year. Several digital creators have already moved into films. Siddhu's Pongal date puts his film among bigger releases, where word of mouth often decides the result.
Vels Film International has backed Siddhu's style from the beginning, including the self-mocking pitch video. With the teaser out and a festival release fixed, the next few weeks of promotion will show whether the comic tone that worked online can also work in theatres.
