For years, independent musicians in India saw Bollywood as the final step in a career, the call that meant they had made it. Anuv Jain is in a position where that call can wait.
The singer-songwriter has built a large following with intimate, guitar-led songs. He has now said that although several film offers have come his way, he is in no hurry to accept them. The reason, he explained, is that his independent work already provides what a Bollywood break was once expected to deliver: income, an audience and creative freedom.
"There have been a few offers from Bollywood, and I would really like to wait for the right project to come my way. I'm quite selective," Anuv shared.
He was careful to explain that this is not a rejection of the industry. "It's not out of any disrespect to anybody, but I feel that if I do something, I want to do it right and give it my best," he said.
The indie advantage
The most revealing part of his remarks was how openly he spoke about money. Indian artists rarely discuss financial security in public, but Anuv credited his independent journey directly.
"I've been very fortunate that all the music I've released independently has helped me build a strong foundation for myself, both financially and in terms of my audience. That has also given me the luxury of being a little more selective and not necessarily getting into things that may seem like very good opportunities but don't truly align with what I feel," he said.
This marks a clear change in the industry. Streaming platforms, social media and live concerts now let independent artists earn a steady living without depending on film soundtracks. Anuv's popularity, built on songs such as 'Baarishein', 'Husn' and 'Jo Tum Mere Ho', is a good example of this new path. For a growing group of independent artists, Bollywood is now one option among several, and they can pick and choose rather than accept any offer that comes along.
Looking up to the greats
Anuv also spoke about the voices that shaped him, starting with Arijit Singh.
"Someone like Arijit Singh, who has been such a benchmark for our generation and someone we all look up to. Then there's Atif Aslam sir, whose music, including his work on Coke Studio, has been absolutely amazing. I also have immense admiration for Sonu Nigam sir, Shaan sir and Lata Mangeshkar ma'am," he said.
A wish for Shreya Ghoshal
One collaboration is high on his wishlist. "Shreya Ghoshal has such a beautiful and incredible voice. I would genuinely love to have the opportunity to work with her someday and write something for her. I think that would be really special," he added.
When Anuv does make his film debut, fans can expect it to happen on his own terms. With his independent career already secure, he can afford to wait for a project that suits him.
