Calling 'Kaho Toh' an out-and-out Bollywood romantic number, Armaan shared the emotional register that pulled him toward the track.
"It always gives me a lot of joy to sing songs like this because they transport you back to a time when these larger-than-life romantic songs were such an integral part of Bollywood films. I'm really happy I got the chance to return to my OG romantic roots with this one," he said.
The nostalgia in that statement is not accidental. In an era where Indian film music has increasingly leaned into indie sounds, punchy hooks and party anthems, a full-scale romantic Bollywood ballad has become something of a rarity. Armaan's decision to return to that register — with intention and pride — is itself a creative statement.
The Team Behind the Track
'Kaho Toh' features on-screen chemistry between Veer Pahariya and Aafiya Sayed, giving the film a fresh romantic pairing to build around. The soulful lyrics have been penned by Sachin Urmtosh, while the music has been composed by Annkur R Pathakk — a fresh collaboration for Armaan.
Adding an unexpected layer of texture to the song is Altamash Faridi, who crooned the qawwali segment of the track — bringing a spiritual, classical dimension to what is otherwise a mainstream Bollywood romantic number.
The Annkur R Pathakk Collaboration
For Armaan, this marked his first collaboration with composer Annkur R Pathakk — and by his own account, he loved what came out of it.
"This is also my first collaboration with Annkur, and I really love what he's done with the song. The blend of that classic Bollywood romance with the Qawwali elements gives it a beautiful character of its own. I'm really excited for people to hear this one," he said.
That specific blend — romantic ballad framework fused with qawwali flavour — is one of the most enduring formulas of Bollywood's most memorable love songs. When done well, it manages to feel both timeless and contemporary at once. Early listens suggest 'Kaho Toh' hits precisely that sweet spot.
The Bigger 'Prem Keetanu' Soundtrack
Before 'Kaho Toh', the makers of 'Prem Keetanu' had unveiled the peppy track 'Undi Bundi', giving fans a first taste of the film's musical universe. Together, the two songs signal that the film's musical album is being built as an emotional spectrum rather than a single-note release.
The 7-song album will feature voices by some of the most recognisable names in current Indian music — Sachet Tandon, Parampara Tandon, B Praak, Armaan Malik, Papon, Jubin Nautiyal, Madhur Sharma, Altamash Faridi, Shashi Suman and Brijesh Shandilya. That's a musical lineup engineered to travel across ages, moods and streaming demographics.
The Film's Story and Cast
Made under the direction of Apoorv Singh Karki, 'Prem Keetanu' is a story about young people navigating the emotional turbulence of friendship, first love, one-sided love and heartbreak. It's a genre space Indian cinema periodically revisits with great success — think 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', 'Wake Up Sid' and 'Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani' — because it maps directly onto universal life stages.
The primary cast includes Veer Pahariya, Aafiya Sayed, Aparshakti Khurana, Rakesh Bedi and Nikhil Vijay, among others. The pairing of newer and established actors gives the film a chance to feel both fresh and grounded at once.
Backed by Gaurav Verma under Avanika Films, and co-presented by Phars Films along with Bhavana Studios, 'Prem Keetanu' is slated for a theatrical release on October 2 this year.
Why It Matters
For Armaan Malik, this release is more than a soundtrack contribution. It's a public reaffirmation of the sonic space where he built his early identity. Over the past few years, Armaan has increasingly expanded into English-language pop, indie collaborations and international releases. 'Kaho Toh' works as a warm, deliberate homecoming to the classic Bollywood love-ballad universe that first made him a household name.
For Indian film music broadly, the return of a full romantic ballad — complete with qawwali underlays — is a small but significant creative moment. It suggests that mainstream cinema audiences are still willing to reward songs built on lyric-driven emotion rather than just hooks and drops.
Industry Impact
The song's release also positions 'Prem Keetanu' as an emotionally driven theatrical release for October — a slot traditionally rewarding for coming-of-age and romantic films. If both 'Kaho Toh' and 'Undi Bundi' translate into strong pre-release audio momentum, the film could enter its opening weekend with genuine music-led word of mouth, a competitive advantage in a crowded release calendar.
The Bigger Picture
'Kaho Toh' captures something Armaan Malik has always done well — sing about love in a way that feels both personal and cinematic. Coming from an artist who has spent the last few years experimenting internationally, the choice to return to a full-scale Bollywood romantic register feels intentional. And with 'Prem Keetanu' set to release on October 2, this song may end up being remembered not just as a single from a film, but as the moment one of India's most beloved young voices publicly reclaimed the space that first defined him.
