As COLORS prepares to launch its new prime-time drama ‘Binddii’, lead actress Radhika Muthukumar has shared a candid look into her emotionally demanding role, revealing that playing an imprisoned mother has profoundly altered her own views on motherhood.

The upcoming show, set to premiere on September 17th, tells the stirring story of Kajal (Muthukumar), a woman who gives birth to her daughter, Binddii, behind bars. When the law separates them, Binddii is thrust into a harsh world where she uncovers the devastating truth: her father, Aviraj (Krushal Ahuja), conspired with a ruthless mafia don, Dayanand Chaudhury (Manav Gohil), leading to her mother’s imprisonment. The narrative follows Binddii’s journey to fight for her mother's freedom against powerful foes.

In a recent interview, Muthukumar explained that the role of Kajal offered unexpected depth. "Playing Kajal has shifted my understanding of motherhood in ways I didn’t expect," she stated. "Before, I thought being a mother was about giving love, care, comfort and protection. But Kajal made me see the other side: it’s also about restraint. About what you withhold... so your child doesn’t have to carry them."

To authentically portray a woman raising a child in confinement, Muthukumar immersed herself in research, watching documentaries and reading first-hand accounts of incarcerated women. She noted the immense strength required to create a world of joy and hope within prison walls. "It was emotionally demanding because Kajal is living two parallel lives," she shared. "On one hand, she’s a prisoner stripped of her freedom, on the other hand, she has to project joy, safety, and hope for her daughter."

Muthukumar described her character as having a surprising "inner strength" beneath a gentle exterior, drawing inspiration from the quiet, resilient women she has observed in her own life. She believes Kajal's story is a powerful metaphor for the invisible shackles many women face in society.

"The message is that shackles, whether inside prison or outside, are meant to be broken," Muthukumar concluded. "This show tells them: you don’t have to accept that cage. You can push back, and fight for freedom."

'Binddii' will air every Monday to Friday at 8:30 pm on COLORS and will also be available for streaming on JioHotstar.
