Immediately after his appointment, Mithun used the moment to unveil a major initiative aimed at reviving the state's film production ecosystem. Speaking to the media, he announced a 30 percent subsidy designed to encourage filmmakers from across India to shoot in Bengal.
"We will try to restore what we have lost," Mithun said, framing the move as an attempt to reclaim Bengal's historical stature in Indian cinema. He added that the subsidy was meant to actively draw production houses and filmmakers to the state: "We are providing a 30 percent subsidy to attract people from across India to Bengal. We are urging people to come to Bengal and shoot here."
Groundwork Laid a Day Earlier
Notably, this announcement wasn't made in isolation. A day prior, Mithun had already raised the subsidy proposal at an event commemorating the birth centenary of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar. During that event, he revealed he had personally appealed to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to sanction the subsidy-a request that was subsequently approved, paving the way for Friday's formal announcement.
Why It Matters: Reviving Bengal's Cinematic Legacy
Bengal's film industry, once a powerhouse of Indian cinema through icons like Uttam Kumar and Satyajit Ray, has in recent years seen production activity increasingly shift toward states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and southern film hubs, many of which already offer competitive shooting incentives. A 30 percent subsidy positions Bengal to compete more aggressively for pan-India productions, potentially boosting local employment in ancillary film services-from technicians and junior artists to location vendors and post-production units.
Mithun's dual identity as both a cultural icon and now a government advisor could also lend credibility and visibility to the initiative, given his standing across India's film industry, not just in Bengal.
Uttam Kumar Film Center: A ₹25 Crore Tribute
The subsidy announcement coincided with another major cultural development-the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Uttam Kumar Film Center in New Town, located in northern Kolkata. Mithun was present at the ceremony alongside Chief Minister Adhikari.
The film center, expected to cost approximately ₹25 crore, has already received budgetary approval from the state's Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The project is being seen as a tribute to Uttam Kumar's legacy, timed deliberately around his birth centenary celebrations.
What Lies Ahead
With Mithun Chakraborty now formally positioned within the state's cultural policy framework, industry observers will be watching closely to see how the subsidy scheme is implemented and whether it succeeds in reversing the outflow of productions from Bengal. The Uttam Kumar Film Center, once completed, is also expected to serve as a long-term infrastructure asset for the state's film and cultural sector, reinforcing Bengal's ambitions to reclaim a larger share of India's booming entertainment production economy.
