Just 10 Days Shot So Far: Nag Ashwin's Reality Check On The Kalki 2898 AD Sequel
Just 10 Days Shot So Far: Nag Ashwin's Reality Check On The Kalki 2898 AD Sequel

Two years after Nag Ashwin transported Indian audiences into the dystopian, mythology-infused world of "Kalki 2898 AD," fans hungry for updates on its sequel have finally gotten a fresh - if underwhelming - status check straight from the director himself. Speaking at a promotional event for Dulquer Salmaan's upcoming film "I Am Game" in Hyderabad, Ashwin confirmed that shooting for the sequel has, so far, covered only a modest 10 days.

The 2024 original, starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, became one of the biggest Indian science-fiction spectacles in recent memory, grossing over ₹1,000 crore worldwide and setting extraordinarily high expectations for its follow-up. Against that backdrop, the pace of the sequel's production has understandably become a source of growing curiosity - and some anxiety - among fans.

"All The Planets Have Aligned... Once"

When the event's anchor reminded Ashwin of his earlier remark that "the planets have to align" for the sequel's shoot to begin, the director responded with characteristic humour: "All the planets have aligned and have already completed one round. Now, once they align again after completing another round, we will resume shooting." Pressed further on the actual shooting progress and future plans, Ashwin was candid about how limited the work has been so far. "Not much. We've only shot for about 10 days so far. As soon as Prabhas garu is free, we'll shoot in a long, continuous schedule," he said, making clear that the production is essentially waiting on the star's calendar to open up before any major progress can be made.

Why It Matters: The Prabhas Scheduling Bottleneck

The update underscores a challenge increasingly common in big-budget Indian cinema: coordinating shooting schedules around a handful of pan-India stars who are simultaneously committed to multiple large productions. Prabhas, arguably the most in-demand actor in the sequel's ensemble, currently has an extraordinarily packed slate that leaves little room for extended "Kalki 2" schedules.

He is presently shooting for director Hanu Raghavapudi's "Fauji," in which he stars opposite Imaanvi, with the film slated for a December 3 theatrical release. Beyond that, Prabhas is also attached to Sandeep Reddy Vanga's high-profile film "Spirit," co-starring Tripti Dimri - a project generating its own considerable buzz given Vanga's track record with intense, high-octane dramas. With both projects requiring his continued attention through post-production and promotions, finding an uninterrupted, extended stretch for "Kalki 2" has proven difficult.

The Bigger Picture For The Franchise

Despite the slow pace, Ashwin's comments suggest the project remains firmly on the studio's roadmap rather than shelved or indefinitely stalled - the team is simply prioritising a concentrated, continuous shooting schedule over fragmented stretches once Prabhas's calendar clears up. Reports around the franchise have also indicated that Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan are expected to reprise their roles, continuing the mythological showdown at the heart of the story, while Deepika Padukone's participation in the sequel remains unconfirmed and has been the subject of ongoing speculation.

Audience Sentiment

For a franchise built on scale, ambition, and years of anticipation, updates like this - however modest - tend to keep fan interest simmering rather than fading. At the same time, the acknowledgment of just 10 days of progress after two years is likely to temper expectations of an imminent release, with industry watchers now recalibrating timelines based on when Prabhas's other commitments, particularly "Spirit," wrap up. Until then, "Kalki 2" remains a project defined as much by anticipation as by actual footage in the can.
