While most of Bollywood reached for witches, vampires and Hollywood villains this Halloween, Janhvi Kapoor went back to her own family’s film history. The actress recreated one of the best-known looks of her mother, the late Sridevi, from the 1986 supernatural drama Nagina. The post read less like a costume reveal and more like a love letter.
Sharing the pictures on Instagram, Janhvi wrote, “Happy Halloweeeeeny ? had to recreate one of the most iconic movie moments everrrrr ??✨”
She explained the thinking behind the look in a longer note: “So much of Halloween has become about dressing up as your favourite characters and pop culture moments. Sometimes they’re spooky, sometimes they’re funny, and sometimes it’s a tribute ❤️”
She then left no doubt about which kind of costume this was: “And who could possibly be more iconic than Mumma, Rishi uncle and Amrish sir!! ??”
The actress added that she “got a little help” with the look, though she playfully kept the details under wraps.
Why ‘Nagina’ was the perfect choice
Directed by Harmesh Malhotra, Nagina cast Sridevi as a shape-shifting serpent woman opposite Rishi Kapoor, with Amrish Puri as the menacing snake charmer Bhairon Nath. The film became a defining moment of 1980s Hindi cinema. Sridevi’s intense stare, her dance sequences and her face-offs with Puri’s sorcerer still circulate widely as memes, reels and tributes.
For a holiday about the supernatural, few Bollywood references fit better. A shape-shifting snake woman is about as Halloween as Hindi cinema gets, and it came with a personal link no other star could claim.
More than a costume
Janhvi’s choice to credit all three actors (her mother, Rishi Kapoor and Amrish Puri) is telling. Both co-stars, like Sridevi, are no longer with us, which gives the tribute a bittersweet quality. Instead of treating the look as a solo glam moment, she presented it as a salute to an entire era of Hindi filmmaking.
This also fits a wider pattern. Indian celebrities increasingly use Halloween, once seen as a borrowed Western festival, to celebrate homegrown cinema. Recreating classic Bollywood characters lets stars connect with audiences who grew up on these films, while introducing the classics to younger viewers who know them only through clips online.
Audience reaction
Fans have often compared Janhvi’s on-screen expressions to her mother’s, and a post like this invites that comparison directly. For many viewers, the Nagina recreation is a nostalgic reminder of Sridevi’s screen presence and of how fondly the industry still remembers her.
For Janhvi, the message was simple: some costumes are about scaring people, and some are about remembering where you come from.
