Famous Hungarian film director Bela Tarr has died. He was 70 years old. He was famous for films like "Damnation" & "Satantango," which were dark & haunting. He is often termed the pioneer of "Slow Cinema." According to an update from the Academy, he died yesterday morning after a prolonged illness.

A statement issued by the Academy said, "We mourn the loss of Bela Tarr, a great director and a strong political voice. He was deeply respected by his peers and loved by people around the world." The grieving family is requested not to be asked for any statement during this time.

Béla Tarr was one of the major proponents of the Slow Cinema movement. This type of cinema is characterized by black and white imagery, long takes, fewer dialogues, an absence of narrative, and a dark capture of life in Eastern Europe. A classic example of such cinema can be seen in his film "Satantango" from 1994, which runs for seven hours.

Béla Tarr was born on July 21, 1955, in Pécs, Hungary. As a child, he played small roles on television. He began making films at the age of 16. His amateur videos prompted the Béla Balázs Studio to support him, and in 1979, his first major film, "Family Nest," was made. His most famous films include "The Outsider," "The Prefab People," and "Almanac of Fall."
