Actress Kani Kusruti, who grabbed the limelight as Kaveri in the popular web series "Maharani" starring Huma Qureshi, will be seen in the upcoming film "Assi," directed by Anubhav Sinha. She will be playing the role of a rape victim in the film. In conversation about the film, the actress said, "How can we know the pain of a rape victim? It is impossible." She went on to reveal how she prepared for the role.
Speaking to PTI, Kani Kusruti said about her role, "I don't think anyone can truly experience the pain of a rape victim." As an actress, we tried to get as close to it as possible.
Sometimes it feels like you're in that situation because you almost believe it happened to you. But I'm not the kind of actress who completely gets into that situation, because it would affect you. I don't do that.
As a woman who has grown up in this country since childhood, do I feel the impact of such attacks or trauma? Yes, I probably do, because people close to me have gone through it. So sometimes it's one of those things you connect with unconsciously.
The actress further said that the film helped her understand the nature of the legal system in India in such cases. Often, court proceedings can resurface past pain. Recalling conversations with friends who have faced similar cases, the actress said that you have to go through that pain to get justice, so there's an irony and a paradox in the system, but that's the way to get justice. You can't forget it. The film also has a line, "They won't let you forget it."
