Actress and philanthropist Somy Ali, founder of the U.S.-based NGO No More Tears, has taken to social media to advocate for open discussions about mental health, urging society to dismantle long-standing stigmas. In a recent Instagram post, Ali highlighted the tragic losses of cinematic legends like Guru Dutt and Parveen Babi, emphasizing how societal taboos have contributed to preventable deaths. Her call to action seeks to normalize mental health conversations and foster greater awareness to save lives.

Ali, who holds a background in psychology, referenced the Hindi film industry’s iconic filmmaker Guru Dutt, celebrated for classics such as Pyaasa and Kaghaz Ke Phool. Dutt battled severe depression and died by suicide at age 39 after multiple attempts. “Our society and its stigma attached to ignoring mental health has gone on for generations,” Ali wrote, pointing to the enduring cultural reluctance to address mental health issues. She also cited actress Parveen Babi, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, alongside global figures like Marilyn Monroe and Robin Williams, suggesting that destigmatizing mental health could have altered their fates.

Through No More Tears, Ali supports survivors of domestic violence and rape, many of whom face mental health challenges. She argues that labeling mental health struggles as taboo perpetuates silence and suffering. “Let’s make mental health a common discussion forum rather than deeming people hysterical and crazy as if we are still living in the 1940s,” she stated. Ali stressed the importance of education about mental health conditions to help those who suffer quietly and prevent further tragedies.

Ali commended actress Deepika Padukone for her pioneering role in mental health advocacy. Padukone, who publicly shared her battle with depression, founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation to support those with mental health issues. “She took a huge step and spoke outside the box, making herself completely vulnerable to the world,” Ali noted, encouraging others to embrace similar courage. She questioned, “Why can’t we?” and urged society to follow Padukone’s example in breaking the silence.

The activist emphasized that unfamiliarity with mental health should not lead to avoidance. “Just because something is unfamiliar to you, doesn’t mean it has a stigma, and you should run away from talking about it,” she wrote. Ali warned that continued silence fuels rising suicide rates, citing Guru Dutt’s death on October 10, 1964, when he was found dead in his Bombay apartment, reportedly after mixing alcohol and sleeping pills. His story underscores the urgent need for change.

Ali’s message is a rallying cry for collective action to normalize mental health discussions. “How many more suicides do we need to witness because we have deemed mental health a taboo subject? Enough is enough!” she declared. By leveraging her platform, Ali aims to shift cultural attitudes, encouraging individuals to educate themselves and support those struggling with mental health issues.

As global awareness of mental health grows, Ali’s advocacy highlights the power of open dialogue and empathy. Her work with No More Tears and her public statements serve as a reminder that breaking the stigma requires education, compassion, and a commitment to change. By fostering conversations about mental health, Ali hopes to create a society where seeking help is as accepted as addressing physical health concerns, ultimately saving lives and building a more supportive future.
